Where do astronomers work?

Astronomers work in national observatories, large astronomy departments at universities, and federal agencies. Some may also work in national laboratories.

Recent graduates of astronomy who begin working as astronomers in observatories often spend anywhere between three to six nights per week mapping the night sky. They are also on-call if an unusual event occurs in the sky.

Most astronomers work with fellow astronomers and research assistants in observatories and laboratories.

Astronomers who work in the university setting may teach astronomy students; however, some of these astronomers do not generally have ongoing contact with the student population but rather work amongst other professional astronomers in observatories and research facilities at the university.
