Who owns Caterpillar?

Caterpillar's roots can be traced back to the creation of steam tractor machines made by the Holt Manufacturing Company in 1890. The steam tractors were extremely heavy and often sank to the ground. Benjamin Holt attempted to fix this problem, and he worked on this for several years, creating lighter and sleeker steam tractors.

In 1911, Holt collaborated with Richard Hornsby Sons to create a steel plate-tracked vehicle. Hornsby found a limited market for the tractor and sold the patent to Holt. Holt trademarked "Caterpillar" and started creating steam-powered tractor crawlers.

Caterpillar is headquartered in Irving, Texas, and is broken down into four divisions:
