Snapchat was founded in September 2011 by Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy upon the relaunch of Picaboo as Snapchat. Snapchat is a multimedia instant messaging app and service. One of the principal features of Snapchat is that the pictures and messages are usually only available for a short time before becoming inaccessible. Much of the appeal has come from the options for filters, effects, text captions, and drawings that can be added to user content.
The app has evolved from originally focusing on person-to-person photo sharing to featuring user stories. User stories are 24 hours of chronological content. Snapchat also has "Discover," which lets brands show ad-supported short-form content. Users are also able to create content that is "my eyes only" and have content in a protected space.
As of July 2021, Snapchat had 293 million daily active users, a 23% growth year-over-year. On average, more than four billion Snaps are sent each day and Snapchat has become one of the most popular apps among younger generations, particularly those under 16 years of age.
In 2021, Snap Inc reported annual revenue of $4.12 billion and $7.54 billion in total assets. Snap, Inc has approximately 5,600 employees.
