Debt and painful reforms (1982–88)
In 1986, IREX relocated to Princeton, New Jersey, and had a close working relationship with Princeton University.
Field offices: IREX opened its first field office in Moscow in 1989.
By relocating to Washington, DC, in 1992—where it remains today—IREX's primarily academic identity began to transform into a more development-focused entity.
Our interdisciplinary Freiburg Exchange began in 2009 and involves several Schools in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
In 2010 the department introduced the GIE field in order to enhance the graduate program’s curriculum and to foster a collaborative learning environment for graduate students whose research interests span beyond the traditional frameworks of nation and region.
With this expansion, some of the GHL’s programming has moved from Princeton's Department of History, where the GHL was founded in 2012, to the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies(link is external) (PIIRS).
Our last workshop with Basel University’s History Department took place in December 2016.
