He is the company’s sixth CEO since its founding in 1967. Thorn began his career as an infantry officer in the US Army in 1989. He is an Airborne Ranger qualified combat veteran of the Gulf War and was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain in 1994. After military service, Thorn joined Cintas Corporation in 1995 and soon became a member of the company’s executive committee before moving to Gap, Inc. in 2000. While at Gap, Inc., he led Global Engineering Services. Thorn went on to become COO of LESCO, Inc. where he co-led their successful merger with John Deere in 2007. Thorn then joined PetSmart from 2007-2015, during that time he became the company’s EVP leading stores, supply chain, pet services, and PetSmart Canada. Over the next several years, Thorn was President and COO of Tailored Brands, the parent company of Men’s Wearhouse, Joseph A. Bank, and Joseph Abboud brands before joining Big Lots in 2018. Bruce believes every difference makes a difference. In addition to sponsoring numerous diversity and inclusion endeavors, he created an endowment for the Excel Scholars program at the United States Military Academy. The program focuses on identifying and promoting highperforming cadets from underrepresented groups to strive for and attain high-profile postgraduate scholarships. His spirit of service also extends to his role as a director on the board of Nationwide Children’s Hospital where Big Lots and its Foundation provided a transformational $50 million gift to construct America’s largest behavioral health treatment and research center for children and adolescents. Thorn graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1989. He also earned his MBA from the University of Cincinnati in 1994. Bruce enjoys spending time with his wife Gabriella and their rescue dog Mia. He also enjoys traveling, walking, cycling, and attending sporting events.
