Nccs history

Housed within Grace Brethren Church in Marietta, NCCS received its official nonprofit status, elected a board of directors, and joined the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) in 1984.

1986: Doctor Fitzhugh Mullan, a co-founder of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (center), leads the NCCS founding meeting.

In 1987, 10 acres of land was purchased near the borderline of Acworth and Kennesaw, and construction began.

In 1989, NCCS’s first eighth-grade class graduated! Enrollment continued to climb.

1990 1990 National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) NCCS becomes one of five founding organizations of the National Breast Cancer Coalition.

In 1992, NCCS relocated its offices to Washington, D.C. to be closer to the organizations and institutions that play a role in educating government agencies and policymakers about the need for quality cancer care throughout the survivorship continuum.

1993 1993 Cancer Leadership Council (CLC) NCCS founds the Cancer Leadership Council, a patient-centered forum of national advocacy organizations addressing public policy issues in cancer, by convening the 8 existing cancer patient advocacy groups.

1995 CanSearch™ Website NCCS launches one of the first Internet sites directing users to credible, online resources on cancer treatment and survivorship.

With exploding growth, NCCS kicked off a capital campaign in 1996 to finance an addition that added 30 classrooms, a gymnasium, science lab, media center, two cafeterias and office space.

The school opened its doors in the fall of 1997 to high school students, adding one grade level each year.

On September 25-26, 1998, 250,000 people gather on The National Mall in Washington, DC and a million more join 200 events in all 50 states calling for better funding for cancer research and access to quality cancer care for all Americans.

2000Clinical Trials Coverage President Clinton’s issuance of an executive memorandum on June 7, 2000 was directly attributable to NCCS’s advocacy.

Head of School Todd Clingman joined the Eagle family in 2007.

NCCS played a leadership role in a creation of a “Blueprint” for quality cancer care, which was first published in the journal Cancer in September 2008.

In August 2009, the FDA finalized two regulations that will improve patient access to investigational drug therapies.

NCCS is very pleased that Representatives Capps and Charles Boustany (R-LA) have reintroduced the legislation (H.R. 3705) in the House and looks forward to working with them and other members of Congress to gain further support for the legislation in 2012
