The Rubega Lab in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department has a grant to enhance nesting habitat for terns on GGI and create a biosecurity plan to protect the colony from predatory mammals, disease, and invasive plant species. The Program Manager (Research Assistant 3) will supervise all aspects of this project. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Organizing and managing the logistics of a nesting habitat restoration project for Common and Roseate Terns breeding on Great Gull Island. Implementing a Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) for all projects related to this habitat restoration project. Ordering and supervising the transportation of supplies to the island. Coordinating with the herbicide contractor and crew for twice-yearly application of herbicides to control invasive plant species on the island. Coordinating and supervising volunteers conducting habitat enhancement on the island, including planting native plant plugs, installing nest boxes, and spreading pea gravel to enhance habitat over existing concrete structures. Coordinating the removal of marine debris from the island. Coordinating boat trips to Great Gull Island for contractors and crew members. Supervising volunteer work crews on the island. Supervising a staff of up to 3 habitat restoration technicians. Writing annual reports summarizing habitat restoration efforts. Enacting a biosecurity plan to protect terns nesting on the island from predatory mammals, disease, and new invasive plants. Job Description: OFFICIAL TITLE: Staff Associate, Postdoctoral Researcher in Star Formation and Magnetic Fields SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Assistant Professor (Ian Stephens) and/or Dean for the School of Science, Technology, and Health SUPERVISION EXERCISED: N/A General Statement of Duties: The Staff Associate, Postdoctoral Researcher in Star Formation and Magnetic Fields will conduct research in collaboration with Dr. Ian Stephens at Worcester State University (WSU). The incumbent will work with data from the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). Part of the funding is to build a single, unified dataset of all HAWC+ polarization data for star-forming regions. Other funds will be used to analyze HAWC+ polarization data to understand the magnetic fields of specific regions in the Gould Belt. Funding is available for 2 years, with a third year possible if more funding is secured. The WSU postdoc will also have an opportunity to collaborate at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. The preferred start date is September, but other start dates are possible as well. Responsibilities: (E) = Essential (E) Conducts research at Worcester State University. (E) Compares observations with models to interpret the role of magnetic fields in forming stars within a galaxy's magnetized spiral potential. (E) Maintains regular communication with WSU supervisor(s). (E) Performs other duties as assigned, consistent with the research project. (E) Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service oriented behavior, worthy of emulation by other staff and students. (E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan through research activities.
