The Stowers Institute for Medical Research is seeking a Research Technician II to join the Hall Lab. Our lab is motivated by the simple premise that we shouldn't be limited to studying biology only in established “model” organisms. We are developing a suite of molecular and imaging tools to enable genetic engineering in diverse emerging model organisms, with the goal of understanding how stem cells support regeneration across the tree of life. Roles & Responsibilities The selected candidate will work closely with the PI to support the lab's research efforts by: Developing and refining techniques to maintain and expand an array of emerging model invertebrates (with a strong emphasis on flatworms). Contributing to molecular cloning that support transgenesis and gene editing strategy development. Performing experiments to characterize regeneration, life history traits, and phenotype variation across species. Maintaining thorough documentation (protocols, experimental records, colony/line tracking) and contributing to lab organization and best practices. The ideal candidate is curious, creative, and resilient in the face of experimental setbacks. They work independently when needed, communicate clearly, and consistently incorporate feedback to improve. What You'll Be Doing Animal husbandry to maintain several species of emerging model flatworms and related invertebrates. Working with the Invertebrate Culture Facility to develop and implement more automated, standardized husbandry workflows. Characterizing life-cycle traits and regenerative capabilities across diverse flatworm species (including phenotyping with immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, and performing genetic perturbations with CRISPR and RNAi). Performing molecular cloning using techniques such as bacterial transformation, minipreps, PCR, gel electrophoresis, restriction digestion, Golden Gate assembly, and Gibson assembly. Initially founded to strengthen marriages and family life, the CHR continues to prioritize this work, expanding its mission to include personal, collegiate, and professional contexts. A core value of the CHR is the faithful integration of psychology, theology, clinical practice, and spiritual formation. Our work serves a diverse audience, both within JBU and beyond. On campus, we engage students, faculty, and staff through curriculum development, workshops, podcasts, confidential conversations, and digital resources. Externally, we equip first responders, clinicians, businesses, churches, the CCCU network, and the national and international academic community with research-based tools and training. Our resources are distinguished by their integration of scholarly rigor, theological depth, and practical relevance. History of the CHR Founded in 1998 through a gift from the Windgate Foundation, the Center for Healthy Relationships (CHR) began as the Center for Marriage and Family Studies under the leadership of Dr. Gary J. Oliver. From its inception, the CHR has focused on equipping individuals and couples to build strong marriages, families, and relational foundations. Early initiatives included launching JBU's Master's program in counseling and establishing the university's Community Counseling Clinic. The CHR continues to support JBU's Graduate Counseling program through scholarships and graduate fellowships. Beyond campus, the CHR has served churches, community leaders, and organizations locally and globally through workshops, assessment tools, and training resources. Its impact was nationally recognized with two federal Healthy Marriage Initiative grants (2006 and 2011), which significantly expanded its outreach and programming. In September 2022, Dr. Rosemary Flaaten assumed the role of Executive Director of the CHR. Under her leadership, the CHR has significantly expanded its presence across the JBU campus, enhancing support for students, faculty, and staff through strategic programming and the development of various resources. During her tenure, the CHR launched the Relationships @ Work initiative, a series of workplace relational workshops designed to equip businesses and nonprofit organizations with evidence-based tools for fostering healthy teams and professional relationships. Postures of a Modern Marriage, another initiative developed under her leadership, is a digital resource currently being developed to support young couples. Additionally, BRAVE, a new program designed to help first responders with tools for healthy marriages, is expanding its reach to a national audience. The CHR is recognized for its interdisciplinary collaboration and thoughtful approach across a broad spectrum of audiences. The Dr. Gary J. Oliver Endowed Chair in Marriage, Family, and Relationship Studies will advance the CHR's national influence through scholarship, public engagement, and strategic partnerships. MD or PhD scientists studying the molecular mechanisms of neonatal diseases such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, necrotizing enterocolitis, genome-microbiome interactions, and the developing gut-brain axis are encouraged to apply. The Division of Neonatology, the Neonatal Diseases Research Program, the Department of Pediatrics, and the CMRI are in an exciting period of growth and expansion. The Neonatal Diseases Research Program (NDRP) is located in the seventh floor of Children's Mercy Research Institute research tower attached to Children's Mercy Kansas City. This is a a new state-of-the-art, nine floor, research building with greater than 375,000 total sq. feet of wet lab space. The new CMRI building houses the majority of CM investigators pursuing translational research, and is equipped several research cores including genomics, flow cytometry, imaging, GMP biologics, and a rodent vivarium. The NDRP has >1000 sq.feet of assigned extensive wet lab space on the 7 th floor for current personnel and to facilitate future expansion. The NDRP, which focuses broadly on the molecular mechanisms regulating endothelial and epithelial injury in the context of the developing lung and intestine, is funded by the NHLBI, NICHD, NIDDK, the March of Dimes, and local foundations. The laboratory combines human genetic studies, cell-culture models, microbiome analyses, transgenic mouse models, novel therapeutics, and translational studies to investigate the inflammatory/developmental basis of neonatal diseases such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, necrotizing enterocolitis, and rare infectious diseases. The laboratory currently employs 6 full time PhD and masters level scientists. Junior faculty and clinical fellows from Neonatology and infectious disease participate in the NDRP. We advocate a culture of discovery, innovation, team science and excellence. Access to an active neonatal genomic biorepository established by Dr. Sampath, that houses de-identified DNA samples from phenotypically well-characterized preterm cohorts, is available. Active collaborations with the Children's Mercy Center for Pediatric Genomic Medicine (Director: Dr. Tomi Pastinen) are underway for advanced sequencing-based discovery of human genetic loci affecting several neonatal diseases, and include the use of single-cell sequencing to characterize cellular phenotypic alterations in pre-clinical models. The Genomic Answers for Kids Study (GAKS), pioneered by the Genome Center, is a one of a kind study characterizing the genetic basis of rare/undiagnosed diseases using advanced sequencing/epigenetic profiling. Several opportunities exist for collaborations with research faculty in the CMRI who study mechanisms of neonatal-perinatal disease including Dr. Robert Lane (Physician in chief), Dr. Todd Bradley (CPGM immunogenetic director), and Dr. Susana Chavez Bueno (Infectious disease) and Dr. Michael Soares (Center for Perinatal research). The Fetal Health Center (Medical Director: Dr. Timothy Bennett), which is dedicated to management to babies diagnosed with complex pathology/diseases, and includes a tissue biorepository, offers opportunities for research and collaboration. About the role We are seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Associate Scientist to join our team. In this role, you will support customer requests-both internal and external-from concept development through troubleshooting and commercialization. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions that meet customer needs and uphold our commitment to quality, taste, and nutrition. Key responsibilities * Support customer projects from ideation to commercialization, including troubleshooting technical challenges. * Participate in brainstorming sessions and develop gold standards in collaboration with Culinary and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). * Conduct competitive product matching and formulation optimization. * Understand and navigate internal processes to provide effective project support. * Troubleshoot customer processes and provide technical solutions. * Act as a strong customer-facing representative to deliver solutions that "Nourish and Delight." * Assist sales and senior R&D representatives during customer calls with technical and culinary presentations. * Collaborate with cross-functional teams to leverage company strengths and deliver superior taste and nutrition experiences. * Research and apply methods to improve food quality, including flavor, color, texture, nutritional value, and convenience. * Complete project requests as required by customers and manage time efficiently. * Provide technical assistance to customers and internal teams as needed. * Work effectively in team environments. * Ability to taste and smell chemicals, flavors, and food products. * Ability to stand for extended periods in a lab setting and lift up to 50 lbs. Qualifications and skills * Education Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Dairy Science, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, or related field (Master's preferred). * Experience 3+ years in food product development or applications (internships/co-ops considered). * Strong knowledge of food processing technologies, HACCP, and regulatory standards. * Hands-on experience with pilot plant equipment and laboratory analysis. * Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. * Strong communication and teamwork abilities. * Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities. * Willingness to travel up to 20%. The pay range for this position is $75,602 - $123,432 in Annual Salary. Kerry typically does not hire an individual at the top or near the top of the range, as we are a pay-for-performance company, and this range is set to continue to reward performance annually while in role. Compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The specific compensation offered to a candidate within the above range may be influenced by a variety of factors including skills, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
