3, 1876: Local advocates for the deaf create the Western New York Institution for Deaf Mutes, later to become the Rochester School for the Deaf.

1920

In 1876, the newly-married Westervelts and the Perkins family put their plans together and founded the Western New York Institution for Deaf Mutes, which opened its doors at the intersection of South and Court streets in October 1876. It changed its name to the Rochester School for the Deaf in 1920.
