The Safety Specialist is responsible for all area activities involving safety and compliance with company policy and regulatory requirements. Job Responsibilities Support the development of Occupational Health & Safety policies and programs Advise and instruct on various safety-related topics (noise levels, use of machinery etc.) Conduct risk assessment and enforce preventative measures Review existing policies and measures and update according to legislation Initiate and organize OHSA training of employees and executives Inspect premises and the work of personnel to identify issues or non-conformity (e.g. not using protective equipment) Oversee installations, maintenance, disposal of substances etc. Stop any unsafe acts or processes that seem dangerous or unhealthy Record and investigate incidents to determine causes and handle worker's compensation claims Prepare reports on occurrences and provide statistical information to upper management Ensure company policies and procedures are always followed. Responsible for project performance, production, and efficiently utilizing site, department and staff resources. Hold daily start of shift meetings to cover safety topics and any near misses Requirements: A minimum of five (5) years in Dredging or Marine Construction Site Safety Health Officer (SSHO) Experience A minimum of Three (3) years of continuous construction as a SSHO on USACE Marine Construction Projects. Health Officer (SSHO) experience is required. In depth knowledge of legislation (e.g. OSHA/EPA/EM 385-1-1) and procedures Develop AHA documents on site with Project Team Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices Experience in writing reports and policies for health and safety Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics Proficient in MS Office; Working knowledge of safety management information systems is a plus Outstanding organizational skills Diligent with great attention to detail Excellent communication skills with the ability to present and explain health and safety topics BS/BA in safety management, engineering or relevant field is preferred Instructor-signed OSHA 30- hour training CARD OSHA 30, EM 385-1-1 certified First Aid, BBP and CPR certified and up to date Physical Demands/Work Environment: Physical/Sensory Functions: Regularly will use sit, use hands, talk/hear; Frequently will reach with hands; Occasionally will stand, walk, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, taste/smell. Lift and/or Move Functions: Regularly will lift-up to 10 pounds; Frequently will lift up to 25 pounds; Occasionally will lift up to 50 pounds. Employee Benefits.
