General Summary:
Supports the mission of the Security Services Department in providing a secure and safe environment that allows patients, visitors, personnel and volunteers to deliver or receive quality patient care with minimal threats against their personal well-being and property.
Essential Job Functions:
• Enforce the policies and procedures of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, to serve as a source of authority for enforcing Medical Center policies, guidelines, and procedures.
• Perform on-foot patrols of Medical Center campuses as directed by the Director of Security or his/her designate. Report safety and fire hazards observed on routine patrols and inspections; look for violations of the Joint Commission, OSHA, NFPA and local Fire Code safety violations. Maintain constant communications with the Security Control Center.
• Assist clinical staff with psychiatric patient restraint; monitor and physically mitigating combative or potentially combative patients as directed, escort patients during clinical transport, and perform direct patient observation of patients under medical or psychiatric restrictions.
• Perform emergency response that includes but is not limited to immediate response to distress calls, panic alarms and emergency calls, fire and disaster response, and support Medical Center Emergency conditions and codes such as bomb threats, patient abduction and elopement, response to weapons on campus, armed intruders, weather emergencies, utility or equipment failure, hazardous material issue, or other emergency as directed.
• Physical intervention for the removal of unauthorized persons from hospital property, intervention of disruptive adults, combative patients, and the detention of individuals suspected of criminal acts, being under-the-influence of alcohol or drugs, disorderly conduct, mental instability or other issues for law enforcement intervention.
• Perform locks or unlocks specified entrances/exits.
• Perform access control duties at assigned security posts. Ensure that only authorized personnel are admitted onto hospital premises; confront unauthorized persons for questions, routing or detainment appropriate to the circumstance.
• Perform Security Control room dispatching by utilizing Computer-Aided-Dispatch systems, monitoring closed circuit television (CCTV), two-way radio transmissions, alarm consoles, and receiving customer phone calls to dispatch security Officers and perform other Dispatcher-related duties.
• Utilize computer-based incident report software to complete reports, maintain records and assist the department with data collection.
• Appear in court on behalf of the Medical Center to enforce prosecution of individuals for assault, criminal trespass, or other issue as required.
• Direct traffic on Medical Center property and control parking of all patients, parents, visitors and employees. Enforce hospital parking guidelines for visitors, contractors and employees.
• Act as a resource of information for patients, parents, visitors and employees. Escort patients, parents, visitors and employees to and from parking areas as needed.
• Secure lost and found articles; maintains logs of items received.
• Enhance personal professional growth and maintain currency in the security field through voluntary participation in educational programs and review of current literature, as well as contributing to mandated departmental in-service meetings and training sessions.
• When required, operate the Security Vehicle for Security Patrols, Safety Escorts, and Emergency Response in a safe manner while complying with all traffic laws.
• Actively and consistently demonstrate customer service values/goals of Children's Hospital of Chicago Medical Center in all interactions with others.
• Other job functions as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Minimum of one year of security experience in a hospital setting, preferred but not required.
• Valid Driver's License required.
• International Association for Hospital Security and Safety (IAHSS) Basic training certification is required to be completed within six months of hire.
• Must have good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to read, write and comprehend the English language well.
• Must be computer literate and have a working knowledge of Windows-based software applications as well as the having the ability to type.

• Crisis Prevention Institute Training (CPI) certification is required to be completed within six months of hire.

The Highlights
Public Safety Officers detect and prevent crime and enforce all laws and University rules and regulations, preserving the peace, protecting life and property within their span of control.
Monitors the safety of students, faculty and staff. This is done at either the Lincoln Park or Loop campus through patrol activity on campus and within university buildings, monitoring visitor access to university buildings, conducting foot patrols, locking down classrooms and responding to service calls and alarms and reports of suspicious activity. Assists Chicago Police and Fire departments with special detail, as needed, for campus activities and events.
What You'll Do:
1) Performs Patrol Activity and Incident response.
Makes frequent patrols, by foot and vehicle (LPC), of designated campus areas to watch for unusual or suspicious activities and hazardous situations, reporting issues to dispatcher and/or supervisor. Takes positive action on complaints/calls for assistance received from faculty, staff, students, visitors and others, providing excellent customer service. (LPC) Responds to a variety of incidents including, but not limited to, burglaries, thefts, assaults, sexual assaults, robberies, accidents, medical emergencies, fire alarms, etc. Detains offenders until Chicago Police is on scene. May be required to testify in court. If incidents occur, writes incident accident/illness reports and determines transport needs of patient for treatment. Notifies the Chicago Fire Dept for assistance if condition is serious or life-threatening and assists the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Fire Department on all incidents on campus.
2) Monitors lobby entrance (Loop) and controls access to unauthorized areas (both LPC and Loop). Observes/screens all visitors/persons entering the premises, monitoring for abnormal activity and questioning suspicious persons. Checks, locks and opens University buildings, classrooms and offices. Checks office areas for suspicious activities.
3) Special Detail/Event Duty.
Provides a variety of services to outside groups who rent space at various times throughout the year (Loop). Assists external law enforcement agencies during dignitary visits; monitors student events that serve alcohol. Handles a variety of issues related to events on campus including, athletic events, festivals, concerts, theatre performance, and move-in weekends (LPC).
4) Provide Escort Services. (LPC)
Provides hospital transports for sick and injured individuals or as requested by University Counseling Services. Provides a daily escort service between the hours of 6 pm and 6 am for the safety of faculty, staff, students and guests on campus.
5) Property Management. (Loop)
Responds to inquiries and enforces university policies on property removal. Assists with routing of deliveries at loading dock.
6) Test and Monitor Equipment and Emergency Radio transmissions.
Tests emergency notification system on a weekly basis. Performs bi-monthly tests of campus emergency call boxes (LPC), and duress alarms.
What You'll Need:
High School diploma, or equivalent required.
Minimum of 1 year of security-related experience or an Associate's (2 years) degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
Must have a valid driver's license and meet the eligibility requirements per the University Vehicle, Driver and Travel Safety Policy.
Must be able to pass a drug screen to be hired.

Must be in good physical condition without any restriction in the ability to walk, run, stand, sit, or climb multiple flights of stairs.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

SECURITY OFFICER - PART-TIME DAWSON TECHNICAL INSTITUTE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Protects and assists college students, faculty, staff, and visitors during an assigned shift. Protects all property of the college and reduces the risk of liability to the college. Enforces state and municipal laws and the rules of the Board of Trustees.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Patrols and monitors assigned areas, including buildings, dock areas and parking lots, maintaining a professional appearance at all times.
2. Protects and assists staff, students and visitors. Ensures only authorized individuals with proper identification are allowed in the building/offices.
3. Adheres to and enforces state and municipal laws and the rules of the Board of Trustees.
4. Ensures that all policies and procedures of the District are followed by students, faculty, staff and authorized individuals.
5. Applies force which is reasonable and necessary under the circumstances to protect life and property in compliance with federal and state statutes.
6. Appears in court hearing related to campus incidents when he/she has signed a complaint, is required as a witness, or is served with a subpoena.
7. Reports all incidents on incident report forms prior to completion of shift and notifies supervisor of disturbances and/or irregularities .
8. Operates CCC vehicles for patrol and other assignments, at the discretion of the supervisor.
9. Enforces parking regulations.
10.Responds to sick or injured persons and calls 911 when required. Provides emergency services to their best ability to prevent further harm or injury.
11.Secures access to building and offices.
12.Maintains proper maintenance and handling of security radios and equipment.
13.Adheres to CCC Customer Service Excellence standards.
14.Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must be an active or retired sworn officer, in good standing with a current or former law enforcement or corrections agency, with at least two years of experience in a law enforcement capacity. Must have a valid driver's license, current CPR and/or first aid certification, and hazardous material training.
2. Completion of a high school diploma or the equivalent, Associates degree or higher preferred. Knowledge of all relevant state statutes and local ordinances.
3. Ability to articulate verbally in a clear and distinct manner during emergency and nonemergency situations.
4. Have a valid driver's license
5. Ability to make accurate decisions based on observations and perceptions.
6. Must be able to work well with staff and students. Must be able to handle situations with tact, diplomacy, and persuasiveness.
7. Basic knowledge of personal computers and the applicable software. Working knowledge of report writing and ability to learn report codes.
8. Must be self-directed and able to prioritize assignments.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Ability to regularly patrol the entire campus area on foot for a full shift.
2. Ability to run or jog for short periods during emergency and non-emergency situations.
3. Ability to stand at an assigned post for an extended period of time.
4. Ability to quickly climb and descend stairs to respond to emergency and non-emergency situations.
5. Ability to physically restrain and remove a person using appropriate force.
6. Ability to bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crawl, and reach in all directions.
7. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
8. Ability to operate all security-related equipment including radios, surveillance cameras, telephones, computers, fire alarm annunciator panel, fire extinguisher, and 2-way radios.
9. Ability to drive and operate CCC vehicles.
10.Physical ability to perform CPR and first aid, including operating AED equipment.
11.Ability to perform job responsibilities under all weather conditions.
Salary for this position is $23.07 hourly. The rate paid is in accordance with the respective bargaining agreement. Benefits information is found at *****************************************
