The position requires professionalism, confidentiality, and the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families. Qualifications:
Education: Minimum of an Associate's degree in Sign Language Interpreting
Certification: Candidate must receive a passing score on the EIPA written exam, and attain and maintain one or more of the following competency levels as defined in Nebraska State Statute, Rule 51:
E.I.P.A- 4.0 or above
Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf Certification (RID)
National Association of the Deaf (NAD)- Competency level 4.0 or above
National Interpreter Certification (NIC)
Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST)-Competency level 4.0
Advanced knowledge and proficiency with American Sign Language, Signed Exact English, and/or other sign language systems, preferred.
Experience: Experience as an SLI preferred, not required

Consult with the classroom teacher and position themselves so that lighting, location and vision is adequate for the student to see the interpreter and the teacher, as well as the material presented
Interact positively with all students and model appropriate dress and behavior
Work with and interpret for a deaf or hard of hearing student in a group setting with hearing students to encourage independence and interaction with peers, and to reinforce skills and language introduced by the teacher
Interpret any and all classes, social and academic activities, formal or informal, in the spirit and content that is presented, in which the assigned deaf or hard of hearing student is involved during the school day
Interpret language of learning materials and instruction from teachers in the sign language system that is best understood by the deaf or hard of hearing student, which will be determined by the educational team
Direct students' questions to the teacher to encourage direct interaction between the teacher and the student. This will foster independence and promote classroom participation
Allow the deaf student freedom to work on his/her own, make mistakes and choices, so as to learn as independently as possible
Team with other interpreters when necessary for class assignments, assemblies, field trips, plays, etc
If no interpreting services are needed, additional responsibilities may include: Tutoring another student who is deaf or has a hearing loss, informal sign language instructions, assisting the teacher in the classroom, and other duties as assigned
Terms of Employment:
The duration of the position is contingent upon the continued funding of the program, project, or assignment for which the appointment is made. The salary and work calendar is to be established by the Board of Education.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sedentary, sitting, walking, and frequent near vision use for reading and computer usage. Interpreters may be required to sit for long periods of time. Interpreters may encounter a variety of physical demands while working in the field, sitting, standing, walking, steps, etc.

JOB GOALS:
The Sign Language Interpreter provides communication access for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. This role involves interpreting classroom instruction, facilitating communication between students and teachers, and supporting the educational development of students in compliance with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The sign language interpreter's primary responsibility is to interpret between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL; or another signed visual system) at a fluent rate. Provide accurate and effective sign language interpretation for classroom instruction, meetings, and school activities.

Position Purpose: The Sign Language Interpreter provides interpreting and other support services to deaf and hard of hearing students. The SLI's primary function is to facilitate communication with peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school. Reinforce skills presented by the teacher.
Provide tutoring for deaf and hard of hearing students when necessary and interpreting is not required, and not during plan time.
Provide interpreting/transliterating for parent meetings during the duty day.
Assist in providing orientations about deafness and the use of sign language to hearing students and staff in collaboration with the Deaf Hard of Hearing Teacher, if needed (i.e.: beginning of the school year, new staff to building).
Assist in implementing classroom adaptations when appropriate, as determined by the IEP, educational team, or in consultation with special education personnel.
Provide general classroom assistance in general education or special education classrooms or occasional sign language instruction in mainstream classrooms when not scheduled to interpret not during plan time.
Work with audiologists and special educators to insure functional status and use of devices for deaf/hard of hearing.
Accept other responsibilities and duties as assigned by teacher, administrator, supervisor, or Lead EI/T when not engaged in interpreting.
Dedication to providing competent interpreting services.
Willingness to adhere to the Omaha Public Schools' EI/T Code of Ethics.
Maintain confidentiality of information regarding students.
Establish and maintain professional relationships with students, staff and parents.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Minimum of an Associate's degree in Sign Language Interpreting
Candidate must receive a passing score on the EIPA written exam, and attain and maintain one or more of the following competency levels as defined in Nebraska State Statute, Rule 51:
E.I.P.A- 4.0 or above
Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf Certification (RID)
National Association of the Deaf (NAD)- Competency level 4.0 or above
National Interpreter Certification (NIC)\
Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST)-Competency level 4.0
Advanced knowledge and proficiency with American Sign Language, Signed Exact English, and/or other sign language systems, preferred.
Excellent attendance record.

Terms of Employment
This position is treated as a full-time non-exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment or teaching in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time, and the Teacher Contract. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The teacher is the educational leader in the classroom and will ensure that the Sioux City Community School District programs and curricula are implemented in a way that maximizes student-learning experiences. The teacher is responsible for the supervision and evaluation of all students within his/her teaching assignment. Consistent with the Department of Education and Sioux City Community School District policies, the teacher will work within an established framework for the delivery of educational services which support student learning. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, the teacher will demonstrate a strong commitment to planning for the improvement of student achievement.
Organizes and presents instruction in an instructional environment which helps students learn the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Develop and maintain long-range and daily instructional plans. Prepares course objectives and outlines for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of the district and state.
Use a variety of teaching strategies such as group work, lecture, mini-lessons, exploration, questioning, discussion, demonstrations, audiovisual aids, and other cooperative teaching techniques. Focuses learning on the next concept beyond that which the student already knows.
Use a variety of formative assessment strategies and continually evaluate student's academic and social growth, using differentiated instruction to allow students to apply current knowledge.
Maintain records for student attendance, evaluations, report cards, discipline records, and documents required by the School Board or Department of Education using prescribed formats.
Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms. Communicate with parents through a variety of methods or means in order to develop a positive reinforcement of interest in student's progress.
Maintain clear, firm, and reasonable work standards and due dates; circulate during classwork to check all students' performance; use oral, written, and other work products to check student progress; pose higher level questioning.
Provide feedback on in-class work to encourage student growth; regularly provide prompt feedback on assigned out-of-class work; affirm a correct oral response appropriately; provide sustaining feedback after an incorrect response or no response by probing, repeating the question, giving a clue, or allowing more time.
Performs related duties such as sponsoring one or more activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting a course of study, and counseling students in adjustment and academic problems. Participate in faculty committees.
Cooperate with other staff members in assessing and helping pupils address social, emotional, and academic issues.
Attend scheduled professional development and make use of materials and techniques that improve the educational program. Maintain professional competence through self-selected professional growth activities. Continue intellectual and professional development and pursue further education in a primarily academic discipline.
Participate in evaluating resources in order to deliver the desired curriculum.
