POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Disability Services, the signlanguageinterpreter provides services to students who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or have other communication disorders. The signlanguageinterpreter assists faculty, staff, students, and District 525 community members by providing signlanguage as a required accommodation under Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 at all campus locations during daytime hours. The SignLanguageInterpreter must value diversity and inclusion to support the mission of the college, and promote a climate of mutual respect and full participation by providing an accessible experience for all students, staff, faculty, and community members.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Professionally represent Joliet Junior College and uphold the College's core values: respect, inclusion, integrity, collaboration, humor, well-being, innovation, quality, and sustainability.
2. Translate oral communication into signlanguage for students, faculty, staff, and community members during events including but not limited to scheduled classroom session(s), meetings, campus events, colloquia, telephone calls, and other situations as needed.
3. Interpret and transliterate American SignLanguage and signed English into oral or written language for hearing individuals as well as others not conversant with signlanguage.
4. Follow the procedures related to scheduling, attendance and other procedures outlined in the SignLanguageInterpreter Handbook.
5. Abide by the principles of ethical behavior as set forth by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
6. Maintain confidentiality of student documentation and records.
7. Maintain accurate and timely records.
8. Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Associate's degree.
2. Valid IllinoisInterpreter license with Intermediate, Advanced, or Master level proficiency and/or Certification of BEI or RID.
3. Valid Illinois driver's license and a car.
4. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.
5. Demonstrated commitment to the college's core values of respect and inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor and well-being, innovation and quality.

Participate in educational team activities either in person or via a report. Activities may include team meeting, Individualized Education Program (IEP) conference and/or informal staffings. Input from the interpreter may involve information regarding communication strategies and progress related to the child's use of the interpreter.
Serve as a liaison between the students who are deaf or hard of hearing, hearing peers, staff and faculty members.
Consult and communicate with TOD and assist in providing in-services to hearing students, staff and parents as requested in regard to signlanguage, deafness, Deaf culture, interpreting and consumer education.
Provide interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities and parent meetings when requested in advance.
Perform other duties assigned by the principal when this does not conflict with the primary responsibility of interpreting.
At times, when it does not interfere with their service as interpreters, educational interpreters may be asked to assist the teacher with some of the more routine classroom duties.
Use any scheduled preparation time to preview materials, conference with teachers, record data in logs, research signs, etc.
Maintain confidentiality: “What goes on in the classroom stays in the classroom.” Maintain professional standards as delineated in the Code of Ethics of the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

The Educational SignLanguageInterpreter is a trained professional who facilities communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and others within an educational setting. Often, American SignLanguage (ASL) is used to interpret spoken language into signlanguage and vice versa, which ensures students have accommodations to classroom instruction, activities and learning discussions.
Minimum Requirements:
+ Proficiency in American SignLanguage
+ Associates degree or Bachelors degree in interpreting, deaf studies or related field, preferred
+ State Board of Education Initial SignLanguageInterpreter Certificate (as applicable)
+ Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certificate (as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
+ Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification ( as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
+ Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
+ Current CPR if applicable
+ TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
+ Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
+ Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
+ Must be at least 18 years of age

Summary:

Required Job Qualifications:
* Completed a 40-hour minimum medical interpreting course OR Bachelor's degree in Translation and Interpretation with experience providing interpretation services in a health care setting.
* Proven verbal and written fluency in specified language as well as in English, including fluency in medical terminology.
* Exemplary customer service skills.
* Able to effectively interact with a broad range of medical center staff and patients.
* Ability to multi-task, problem solve and troubleshoot.

Physical Demands:
* Position requires frequent and continual movement between medical center departments and buildings throughout any given shift.
Responsibilities:
1. Conducts medical and general interpretation for Medical Center staff, patients and their families and visitors during assigned shift.
2. Participates in pre-scheduled patient/staff conferences as assigned, as well as in on-call interpretation needs during shift.
3. Acts as a liaison between hospital staff and patients when interpreting questions, directions, policies and procedures.
4. Assists Medical Center staff with the assessment of situations in a culturally diverse context.
5. Per department and medical center standards, records and compiles daily, weekly, or monthly information regarding interpretation services provided. Assists with reporting as needed.
6. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed.
7. Per department standards, contacts non-English speaking patients upon admission.
8. Communicates any patient questions or concerns to said staff.
9. Informs the proper departments or parties with regard to any cases requiring special attention or follow-up.
10. Assesses patients' understanding of discharge instructions.
11. Assists in the process of translation of written materials as needed.
12. Identifies materials requiring translation.
13. May translate non-technical instructions, patient-related information and simple forms into written format as needed.
14. Serves as proofreader for material translated by the professional translation service.
15. Participates in educating Medical Center staff on use of interpreters through formal and informal mechanisms.
16. Informs medical center staff of policies and procedures relating to interpreter services.
17. Participate in the training and orientation of new staff or volunteer interpreters as needed.
18. Cooperates with Medical Center staff and other department interpreters toward the provision of support to the patient served.
19. May assist department with operational or administrative needs relative to interpreter services.
20. Monitors effectiveness of interpreter services provided. Recommends any service or operational improvements to Assistant Director.
21. May assist with administrative needs, to include: fielding of translation requests, coordination of assignment requests to interpreter staff, and coordination of documentation.
