SPUR company history timeline

1911

The earliest spurs were possibly made from wood or bone and probably took the form of “prick” or “prong” spurs, as recorded in Patagonia and Terra del Fuego (de Lacy 1911).

Known then as the San Francisco Housing Association (SFHA), the group writes a hard-hitting report that results in the State Tenement House Act of 1911.

1964

The franchise, which was started in 1964, is widely regarded as one of the premier grill rooms in Cape Town.

1965

The use of spurs declined in day-to-day activities, but remain as part of the kit for formal attire.The long shank spurs were discontinued in 1965 when riding was taken out of the 'basic' training.

1967

Spur was founded in 1967 when Allen Ambor invested R4000 into opening the Golden Spur in Newlands, Cape Town.

1973

The team started out as the Dallas Chaparrals in the American Basketball Association (ABA). The Chaparrals were moderately successful, but the team was sold to a group of San Antonio businessmen in 1973, relocated, and renamed the Spurs.

1974

He chose to bypass college, however, and sign with the Utah Stars of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1974, thereby becoming the first player to enter professional basketball directly from high school.

1976

The Spurs joined the NBA when the league agreed to absorb the four most successful ABA franchises in 1976 after the younger league began to struggle financially.

After the ABA dissolved in 1976, he was acquired by the NBA’s Buffalo Braves, who traded him to the Houston Rockets two games into the 1976–77 season.

1981

In 1981 he led the Rockets to the NBA finals.

1982

He signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1982, teaming with Julius Erving, and the following year the team won the NBA championship.

1983

Malone was named MVP of the championship series and of the league in 1983.

1985

After Gervin was traded from the team in 1985, the Spurs experienced a four-year string of losing seasons.

1986

The group first listed on the travel and leisure sector of the JSE in 1986.

1989

Robinson’s presence was the catalyst for a 35-win improvement in the 1989–90 season for the Spurs, and the team qualified for the postseason in each of his first seven years in San Antonio, but he could not carry the team past the conference finals on his own.

1990

In December 1990 a second restaurant brand, Panarottis Pizza Pasta, was developed by the group.

1995

During his 19 years in the league, he set records for most free throws made (8,531; since broken by Karl Malone) and most offensive rebounds (6,731). He retired in 1995, having scored 27,409 points and collected 16,212 rebounds, which ranked him among the NBA’s all-time top 10 in both categories.

1997

Fortune shone on the Spurs in 1997 when, after an injury-plagued 20–62 season, the Spurs won the NBA draft lottery, which allowed them to choose forward Tim Duncan with the first overall selection of that year’s draft.

2003

In 2003, which was Robinson’s last season with the team, they won another title and thus allowed him to end an illustrious career on top.

2004

In November 2004, the group acquired a 60% shareholding in John Dory’s Fish, Grill & Sushi, a KwaZulu-Natal based franchise comprising seven outlets.

2013

In December 2013 Spur Corporation bought The Hussar Grill, an upmarket steakhouse chain comprising multiple restaurants in the Western Cape.

2015

The group continued to acquire brands, and in March 2015 acquired a 51% stake in RocoMamas, the fast-casual smashburger chain with its origins in Johannesburg.

In 2015–16 San Antonio won a franchise-record 67 games, which was tied for the fifth highest win total in league history at the time, but the team failed to get past the second round of the playoffs, where it was upset by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

With the fast-casual trend catching on worldwide, Spur Steak Ranches launched Grill & Go, in mid 2015.

2016

The Spurs won 61 games in 2016–17, the second highest total in the league that season, and advanced to the Western Conference finals.

2018

In August 2018, the Group bought Nikos Coalgrill Greek, which currently operates nine franchised outlets located in Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Comprising five restaurants at the time of acquisition, the brand enjoyed phenomenal growth to exceed 85 restaurants locally and internationally by mid 2018.

2020
