AES is recruiting a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to provide technical expertise in all phases of renewable energy project development, from the initial stages through construction and operations. This role will support the delivery of foundation solutions for wind, photovoltaic (PV), and grid-scale battery storage facilities ranging in capacity from less than 5 MW to over 1,000 MW.
The Senior Geotechnical Engineer will address geotechnical matters across project teams to optimize design, mitigate risk, and help ensure successful results. The position requires adaptability and time management skills to handle multiple geotechnical requests of varying complexity while upholding standards for safety, technical quality, and professional integrity.
Candidates should have a deep understanding of geotechnical engineering principles, soil mechanics, and foundation design methodologies. Significant experience in foundation, earthwork, roadway, and slope stability design and review for large renewable energy projects is required.
We are open to hiring a candidate outside of the listed locations. However, if a candidate is located near one of the office locations, there will be potentital hybrid arrangements.
Key Responsibilities
Project Development and Risk Assessment
* Identify geotechnical risks during early project development and provide recommendations on design and cost estimation.
* Conduct preliminary site hazard assessments for developments in the planning phase.
* Prepare initial cost estimates for geotechnical investigations and recommend consultants for request for proposal processes and address requests for information during construction
* Collaborate with consultants to define scopes of work for project-specific geotechnical investigations.
* Finalize investigation scope, cost, and schedule prior to contract award.
* Review geotechnical reports for technical accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
* Assess laboratory and field data relevant to foundation design and construction.
* Advise on design parameters including foundation embedment, earthworks, and geohazard considerations.
* Support mergers and acquisitions due diligence concerning potential asset acquisitions.
Project Execution
* Work with AES staff and consultants to develop and review design packages (30%, 60%, 90%, 100%, IFP, and IFC civil, structural, and electrical).
* Document any deviations from project geotechnical recommendations.
* Evaluate design solutions for turbines, solar trackers, energy storage, and related infrastructure.
* Adjust contract specifications as needed to support EPC contract negotiations.
Project Construction and Quality Assurance
* Assist project management and engineering with troubleshooting or alternative remediation plans.
* Conduct site visits and field inspections for foundation, earthwork, and ground stability assessments during construction and operations.
* Carry out safety assessments and site walks to identify workplace hazards.
Asset Management and Operational Support
* Partner with Operations and Maintenance and Asset Management teams on operational troubleshooting and remediation plans.
* Develop solutions for system modifications and resolve geotechnical issues among subcontractors and vendors.
* Perform root cause analyses for geotechnical-related failures.
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
* Serve as a technical resource on geotechnical topics.
* Participate in internal and external meetings.
* Evaluate geotechnical consultants for Master Service Agreement consideration.
Organization Maturity and Innovation
* Mentor staff on new technologies, construction practices, and safety protocols.
* Engage process improvement initiatives.
* Maintain awareness of industry standards and emerging geotechnical technologies.
* Support innovation with reviews related to structural design.
Skills And Qualifications
Education and Experience
* Bachelor's degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering.
* At least 5 years' progressive experience in geotechnical engineering design, analysis, and construction support.
* Minimum 2 years' experience with PV solar, wind, battery energy storage, and high-voltage facility design.
* Field experience on large-scale civil/geotechnical projects, including geotechnical QA/QC and construction oversight.
Technical Competencies
* Advanced knowledge of geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, foundation design, geological conditions, subsurface risks, and site characterization methods.
* Proficiency with geotechnical software and tools (LPILE, MFAD, Slope/W, etc.).
* Experience with SPT, CPT, pile load testing, and geophysical methods (MASW, seismic refraction, electrical resistivity imaging).
* Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (AASHTO, ACI, IBC, ISO, ASCE 7, DNV).

Process / Technical Service Engineers may work on a variety of projects in the Technical Services Department together with your mentor that put your classroom experience as a Chemical Engineer into practice. The vast majority of our Chemical Engineering interns/co-ops work in this area. The experience will expand your understanding of the refining environment and technical aspects of the refinery. Past projects/duties include: develop and lead test runs to optimize refinery operations; perform process engineering calculations concerning the various process technology (or equipment) in the refinery; monitor and make recommendations in regards to catalyst and adsorbents; complete projects and provide recommendations for improvements to the refinery process and equipment.
Operations Research Engineers may help develop planning, blending, scheduling, and process models for refinery engineers. The models are used to optimize crude oil purchasing, refinery production, blending and finished product scheduling, and optimization of refinery production. Typical college co-op assignments include: validation of production data and mass balancing, process modeling, and development of graphical interfaces of refinery process units.
Environmental Engineers work on projects that involve the compliance of the entire refinery, and you will be exposed to the majority of process units in the refinery. You will be applying the engineering principles and calculations to various environmental projects and will also give you a broad knowledge of the various environmental laws that are applicable to refineries and what it takes to maintain compliance with those laws. Past projects/duties include: perform process calculations for the Risk Management Plan, including taking physical surveys of refinery process units; work on various process engineering projects within a Wastewater Treatment Plant; participate in inspections and/or testing that is conducted by federal, state, or local officials.
Products Control / Economics Engineers may work on a wide array of projects including operations, blending, and refinery economics. You will gain an understanding of how a tank farm is operated and how gasoline and other products are prepared and shipped to customers. In addition, you will gain some exposure to the overall economics of the refinery and how operating decisions are made based upon these economics. Past projects/duties include: analyze refinery process flow data and compare to recommended optimum levels, this will help in identifying equipment failures which cause variances in capacity from the optimum levels; update information on gasoline blends and tank samples in preparation for an annual blender waiver audit; develop applications to better present process data for refinery operating decisions.

The AES Clean Energy Legal team has nearly thirty attorneys that are experts in every facet of clean energy development. This position will be in the Development and M&A group consisting of six attorneys and one paralegal. Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
* Provide advice and counsel to development, permitting, interconnection, environmental, stakeholder relations, and project execution teams for renewable energy and battery storage projects from inception to construction-ready status.

Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a Process Engineering Manager at the Martinez Renewable Fuels Facility. The Process Engineering Manager is responsible for leading a group of process Engineers that support refinery Area Teams. The Manager will be responsible for managing their performance and aiding their professional development.
Responsibilities:
Directs technical resources during all modes of refinery operation including normal, upset and emergency conditions (sometimes with ICS/EOC responsibilities), turnaround coverage/direction, and startup/shutdown activities. Provides technical guidance related to operating procedures, environmental compliance, management of change, safety and relief system operation and design. Ensures adherence to process engineering refining standard practices and prepares engineers to conduct thorough process hazard reviews and incident investigations.
Supports engineers on monitoring process unit health and troubleshooting operating problems such as capacity limitations, product quality issues, corrosion and fouling mechanisms, and equipment failures. Collaborates with other departments and disciplines to develop repair/redesign options to address acute or chronic operating problems. Directs resources in the planning and execution phases of turnarounds, where responsibilities include inspecting tower internals, heat exchanger cleanliness, directing catalyst loading and chemical cleaning processes, and monitoring environmental compliance.
Directs and advises engineers as they give guidance to their shift teams on optimizing refinery operation against known constraints. Advises and directs engineers in developing test run plans to improve energy efficiency, yields, capacities, product quality, reliability, and utilization while ensuring environmental compliance. Interfaces with economics/planning, commercial, and feedstock/products organizations to evaluate the suitability of new operating conditions, new feedstocks, or new product specifications.
Directs engineers in making sound investment decisions with robust economic justification in support of their recommendations, including process improvements, environmental or safety upgrades, and catalyst/chemical recommendations. Advises direct-reports and works with technologists to evaluate and approve selection of suppliers/contractors for process engineering, troubleshooting, catalyst supply/handling, chemical applications.
Communicates with leadership, peer supervisors, and other stakeholders to align on priorities and resource allocation. Prepares progress reports and decision support presentations for management to communicate accomplishments, justify recommendations, and elevate risks/concerns.
Participates in department-wide responsibilities (preparing/managing department budget; preparing/managing chemicals & catalyst budgets; department staffing decisions, including recruiting, interviewing, and selection of candidates; university campus engagement; maintains third-party working relationships with licensors, technology vendors, catalyst/chemical suppliers, and engineering contractors).

The High Voltage Engineering team delivers both pre-construction development engineering and execution engineering for High Voltage facilities associated with renewable energy power plants. Voltage ranges from 35kV up to 500kV. We are currently looking for a dynamic and team-oriented Senior High Voltage Development CAD Designer. The designer for this position should enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and collaborating with multiple stakeholders (real estate/survey, Substation/Transmission Engineering, and Project Management) throughout the design process. This is a solid opportunity for a designer that not only is proficient in the technical aspects of drafting but that enjoys building and maintaining relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
* Develop up to a 30% substation package in AutoCAD and/or Bluebeam ranging from 35kV up to 500kV. This includes single line diagrams, substation layouts, control building layouts, electrical elevation views, substation access, site access, relay panel elevations, etc.
* Support Transmission Line Engineering with drafting needs by developing technical exhibits showing transmission structure pole designs.
* Develop a substation and transmission CAD design standardization process to expedite design timelines.

Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Project Engineers work on a variety of real-world electrical and instrumentation projects in a refinery setting. During your time at MPC, you will develop and utilize project management skills including scope alignment, cost and schedule development, and teamwork through multiple engineering phases. You will also support the area teams. We are committed to developing engineers into professional project managers who successfully manage projects of all sizes.
Reliability Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Engineers troubleshoot Electrical & Instrumentation issues at the refinery. As a reliability intern, you will help analyze failures of equipment, develop solutions for recurring equipment difficulties, submit Project Request Forms (PRF's) to implement solutions, and understand equipment maintenance strategies. There will be opportunities to use electrical analysis software to solve coordination issues and run Arc Flash studies for the power system, as well as learning and understanding about how our critical Refinery Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) are applied.
Process Control / Technical Service Engineers can work on a wide array of projects in support of the process control systems installed throughout the refinery and products movements areas. The process control systems in the refinery provide real-time control and data acquisition functions in support of operating the refinery process and electrical equipment. Typical college co-op assignments include the following: troubleshooting system power supply problems, control system programming, hardware and software lifecycle replacement projects, installing and troubleshooting communication networks and monitoring control system performance metrics.
