The Wimble Company company history timeline

1877

The Wimbledon Championships were founded in 1877, so this year it is just shy of being 140 years old.

1879

Several years after losing to John Hartley in the 1879 final, Vere Thomas St Leger Goold was found guilty along with his wife Marie Girodin of killing a wealthy Danish widow by the name of Emma Liven in Monte Carlo.

1906

W.K. Kellogg eventually bought out his brother and in 1906 established the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company.

1921

In 1921 Liverpool-born Max Woosnam won the Wimbledon Men’s Doubles competition along with Randolph Lycett.

1922

The present name was adopted in 1922 after the company began making cereals other than cornflakes.

And so the All England Club, to coin its abbreviated title, started looking for a new site. It eventually settled on an area of land off Church Road to the north of Wimbledon town centre, moving to its new home in 1922.

1939

By the time hostilities resumed again in 1939 Wimbledon had moved from Worple Road to Church Road becoming a larger, more resilient and far less amateur operation in the process.

1940

On the night of 11 October 1940 a ‘stick’ of 500lb bombs caused considerable damage to the club’s grounds with one striking the Centre Court roof.

1947

In 1947 Hans Redl of Austria progressed to the fourth round of the Men’s Singles event at Wimbledon.

1956

Redl went on to compete at Wimbledon until 1956.

1958

IBM’s line of electric scoreboards appeared in athletic stadiums until 1958, when the company sold its Time Equipment Division.

1962

In 1962 Stanley Matthews won Junior Wimbledon.

1969

In 1969 the company began to diversify.

1970

Smith’s Pie Company in 1976; and Pure Packed Foods, makers of nondairy frozen foods, in 1977. It purchased Fearn International, makers of soups, sauces, and other foods, in 1970; Mrs.

2005

In 2005, IBM shared an Emmy Award with Warner Brothers for its development of the “station in a box,” which enabled the WB Network to broadcast to local markets where there is no broadcast signal.

2010

In 2010, IBM introduced the IBM Linear Tape-Open® file system, which combined the long-term large storage capability of tape media with easier access to the data—ideal for companies that need to store and share files.

2011

On June 20, 2011, thousands of tennis fans will turn their attention to the 125th Wimbledon Championships, and IBM will work to provide a smarter fan experience in its 21st year as Official Supplier of Information Technology.
