The beginning of the software can be traced to “Project Omega”, started by Microsoft in 1988.
In 1992, Borland just purchased Ashton Tate, and between Paradox and dBASE, another database product, controlled 85 percent of the personal computer database market.
1993: Access 1.1 improved the compatibility of Access with other Microsoft applications.
As Microsoft released newer operating systems which included Windows 98, the very unpopular Windows ME and eventually the more stable Windows 2000/NT, a brand new significant version of Access 2000 was introduced.
Notice that from Access 2007 onwards, Access has included an Office-specific version of Jet called the Office Access Connectivity Engine (ACE).
Access 2010 was released in the summer of 2010 and gives some new enhancements over the previous version.
2013: Access 2013 introduced a new architecture that stored its data in SQL Server databases, offering a relational database design.
In 2015, the Linked Tablet Manager was updated to refresh, relink, or remove linked tables.
The current version of Access was introduced in 2016 and is known as Version 16.
The last, and current, Access Version was designed in 2019 to be compatible with the newer Windows 10 and 11 operating systems.
The last update for this version, released in 2021, optimized the use of Access in the Windows 11 OS, as well as introducing other minor updates.
