Position Summary: The Foreign Language department is seeking a Chinese adjunct professor to teach Elementary level Chinese language. JCCC is located in Overland Park, KS, the second largest city in the state of Kansas and part of the greater Kansas City Metro. The Kansas City Metro is known for its museums, restaurants, and music and art scenes. JCCC is similarly dedicated to creating and maintaining a rich cultural community, with an award-winning contemporary art museum and center for the performing arts located on campus.
JCCC is looking for a diverse pool of applicants for a part-time adjunct faculty position in the Foreign Language Department to serve as a substitute or teach Elementary Chinese in the day or evening in the summer, spring or fall semesters in person and live online (Zoom). The Foreign Language Department is part of the Communications Division. Many of our students are non-traditional, military veterans, immigrants, international and first-generation college students. JCCC has a diverse student population and is dedicated to increasing its diversity.
The successful applicant for this job may teach the equivalent of 5-10 credit hours or serve as a substitute professor. This person will perform other duties expected of adjunct faculty, to include collaborating and working successfully with other full-time and adjunct faculty in the Foreign Language department and other duties as assigned.
Additional possible responsibilities:
Provide extra and co-curricular opportunities for Chinese language students.
Participate in the planning and administration of all departmental initiatives.
Participate in on-campus events promoting languages.
Complete ACTFL and/or other departmental training.
Candidates will be interviewed using Zoom and will be asked to teach a 30 minute class using Zoom.
Required Qualifications:
* M.A. degree in Chinese or language pedagogy, literature, culture, second language acquisition, applied linguistics, or related field with native or near native fluency.
* Demonstrated ability to teach Elementary Chinese courses.
* Demonstrated ability to teach online using Zoom or a platform similar to Zoom.
* Demonstrated excellent communication and collaboration skills.
* Demonstrated knowledge of using technology in teaching.
* Demonstrated 2 years teaching experience at the post-secondary level and/or 4 years of high school teaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Demonstrated knowledge of using technology in the classroom.
* Demonstrated understanding of the climate of post-secondary institutions.
* Demonstrated knowledge of ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages.
* Documentation from ACTFL (OPI) of advanced mid or higher in Chinese.

Job Description

Anticipated Hiring Range

Job Description
The UMKC Conservatory invites applications for a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track position in Digital and Immersive Media at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning in Fall 2026. This position involves teaching and research that extends into diverse media contexts including theatre, dance, music, and integrated opportunities. Here, "media" refers to screen-based, interactive, and immersive environments where images interact with music, narrative, space, and technology. Examples include media creation for digital platforms such as projections, installations, video mapping, animation, and digital design, as well as live or hybrid performance work.

Effective teachers should meet institutional expectations. Therefore, faculty members are expected to do the following:
Meet classes as scheduled; notify the appropriate Chair, Assistant Dean, or Dean in advance if they are to be absent, and, if possible, arrange for a substitute instructor or assignments for his or her class.
Be accessible to students through e-mail, wireless/cellular technology, or scheduled office hours including arranging, when necessary, additional time for appointments.
Prepare and distribute syllabi in accordance with established procedures and guidelines and follow the published final exam schedule.
Maintain accurate records of students' academic standing; promptly provide final grades, attendance, and other information as required by administration.
Respect the confidentiality of student information; refrain from discussing or releasing such information except within recognized limits.
Evaluate students based solely on their academic performance and to respond promptly to student grade questions and/or appeals.
Member of the College Community - In addition to teaching, faculty members are expected to be an active member of the college community. Listed below are the expectations of faculty as responsible and professional representatives of JCCC. The Clinical Scholar Track is for full-time faculty members who are heavily involved in clinical service, education, and related scholarship.
