Does the IRS drug test?

By Justin Parker - Jun. 12, 2023

Yes, the IRS drug tests all potential hires. The federal agency requires that all potential employees submit to a drug screening and receive a negative result in order to be considered eligible for employment. In addition, the IRS also requires job candidates to submit to:

  • A criminal background check
  • Agency-approved physical examination
  • Credit check

The IRS asks all potential hires to submit to a urine drug test during the hiring process. Current employees that are involved in a workplace accident are also required to take a drug test. The IRS also holds the right to randomly drug screen employees at any date of its choosing.

In addition, employees suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while working are also required to submit to a drug screening. Once an employee of the IRS, the agency reserves the right to conduct random drug tests if they deem reasonable suspicion or if the employee is involved in an accident.

The agency also holds the right to use other drug tests on its employees, such as hair tests.

Here are the times when the IRS requests a drug test:

  • When employees are suspected of being intoxicated at workWhen employees are involved in a workplace accidentWhen employees experience a work-related injury

In any of these instances, a failed drug test can result in disciplinary action, including termination, and possible criminal prosecution, if the employee has endangered the lives of their co-workers.
