How hard is it to become a CRNA?

By Zippia Team - Sep. 7, 2022

It is very difficult to become a CRNA. CRNA school is one of the most difficult schools to get into and complete. Students must dedicate a tremendous amount of time to studying the concepts and principles of their programs.

According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA), it takes a minimum of seven to 8.5 years to pursue a career as a CRNA. The first step to pursuing a career as a nurse anesthetist is to earn a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN). BSN graduates must also pass a licensing exam and apply for a license or register.

All CRNA programs require at least one year of experience as a registered nurse in a critical care setting (e.g., critical care unit, intensive care unit), although many nurses will have at least three years of experience. ICU experience may help nurses better handle the demanding coursework for the CRNA program.

After gaining experience in critical care nursing, apply to a certified registered nurse anesthetist program. After completing CRNA school, you will need to take the National Certification Exam (NCE). The NCE is administered by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.

After CRNA program graduates pass the exam, they can register with a relevant regulatory body.
