How much do finance majors make?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

Finance majors make between $50,000 and $1 million, or more, per year. This depends on the company a finance major works for, their job titles, and any bonus compensation they might make.

Finance majors generally make very high salaries when compared to many other majors. Here are some finance positions and their average annual salaries:

  • Financial Analyst

A financial analyst analyzes past and current trends to help create a better financial future for a company or client.

Financial analysts use financial reports created by accountants to help guide a company on how best to use its resources. They aim to investigate data to identify business opportunities or give investment plans. Senior financial analysts focus on devising investment recommendations more than anything else.

The average salary of a financial analyst in the United States is $73,233 per year.

  • Statistician

Statisticians examine specific sets of data and apply business models to them. They study and try to solve organizational issues in a company using statistics. Once they have determined which data can be used to resolve a specific issue, they utilize surveys and different kinds of experiments to gather information.

Statisticians use industry-standard concepts in their analyses but might create new theories, rules, and models if necessary.

Once a statistician is done with their analysis, they translate the new information they've learned into reports for executives at their companies to help with decision-making and strategy options.

The average salary of a statistician in the United States is $92,270 per year.

  • Investment Banking Analyst

This is an entry-level finance position, and it still pays well on average. They spend their workdays taking orders from investment associates and directors.

They often utilize programs such as Excel and PowerPoint. The role is notorious for long working hours and very little sleep. Generally, the position breaks down as part investment analyst, part computer tech, and part personal assistant to higher personnel.

Investment banking analysts have an average base salary of around $100,000 annually.

  • Investment Banking Associate

Most first-year associates oversee investment banking analysts and perform some of the same tasks. They play a group leader or managerial role to analysts.

Associates must be skilled in communication because they often act as liaisons between senior banking officials and their team of analysts.

With bonuses and other compensation, a first-year associate can earn up to $225,000 annually, with a base salary of around $150,000.

  • Senior Vice President

For many in the finance industry, this is the highest role one can obtain. Life as a senior vice president is vastly different from the lives of analysts, associates, and investment VPs.

Their main objectives and responsibilities fall under the prospecting and allocating of new business. Senior VPs often do a lot of traveling because of this.

Their annual salaries range from $500,000 to $1 million yearly (before bonuses).
