How to become a manager at Amazon

By Justin Parker - Feb. 20, 2023

To become a manager at Amazon, follow these steps:

  • Get the proper education. Managers at Amazon tend to have at least bachelor's degrees in areas like:

    • Business administration

    • Marketing

    • Business management

Most applicants to manager roles will have at least a bachelor's level education, meaning you will be up against some stiff competition. You might consider getting your MBA or a master's degree in a relevant field to help you stand out from the many contenders.

  • Develop and hone the right skills. Amazon demands that their managers have varied skill sets. Some of the most important skills to become an Amazon manager include the following:

Manager positions at Amazon involve task delegation to subordinates and report filing.

  • Amazon Manager Online Application. Here is a step-by-step guide to the online application process:

    • Navigate to the Amazon website. Amazon announces openings for managerial roles here on its website.

    • Pick the appointment for the role of manager when one becomes available.

    • Create a profile on Amazon. An example of a managerial position is an area manager, which can be found under Fulfillment and Operations Management. Upload your resume. You will not be asked to provide a cover letter.

    • Amazon does not accept cover letters, so make sure your resume is tip-top.

It is a good idea to create a resume specifically for Amazon. You should tailor this document to align with the job description, its responsibilities, tasks, and preferred qualifications.

Look for what the company wants in a manager candidate, and then adjust your resume accordingly. Be honest, but use your experiences to best reflect what it is looking for.

  • Online assessment tests. If you are selected and make it to the next stage, you must complete an online manager assessment test. Your performance on this test will determine whether or not you move on to the next stage in the hiring process. There are two tests to take:

    • The first test has you use Amazon's 16 leadership principles and critical thinking to make hypothetical decisions and snap judgment calls.

Each hypothetical situation will represent some possible scenario from an Amazon management workday. There is no time limit, but all answers are considered final.

    • Next, you have an assessment test concerning your work style. The Amazon recruiter uses your answers from this test to determine if your personality is a good fit for Amazon. There are 38 statements you must select to strongly agree or not agree.

Passing these tests takes you to the interview phase.

  • Interviews. You need to be highly motivated and driven. This should come across in your interview with Amazon. Keep in mind that you are one out of possibly hundreds of applicants; any way you can highlight your skills, abilities, or experience, you should take full advantage of them.

Amazon uses the STAR format for interviews, which consists of the following:
