How to put an internship on a resume

By Zippia Team - Sep. 7, 2022

To put an internship on a resume, follow these two steps:

Create an internship section

This is helpful if you have more than one internship experience you want to include on your resume. Create a header with internship in the title and list your internships in sequential order, with the most recent one being first.

However, if you have only completed one internship, you can list this after all of your professional work experience in your employment history section.

If the internship is the only professional experience you have, you can lead with this on your resume and follow with education history, awards, achievements, and references, etc.

Write about the internship like any other job

An internship, while meant as a training and professional exposure experience, is still a job. Some internships are even paid positions, though most often, they are unpaid. Either way, it is still work experience, so you should write about it as such.

Include your internship title. If possible, try to avoid just listing this as "intern". If you can get more specific, like a sales intern, marketing intern, or IT intern, do so. This gives specifics to your role and gives potential employers a better idea of your skill set.

Next, include the company's name, location, and the start and end dates of your internship. You can simplify the dates by using a specific season along with the year, such as Summer 2022.

Then should list your responsibilities and tasks performed. This can be done with between three to five bullet points. You can also include any of your achievements you may have gotten while interning with the company.

It is important to focus on skills you gained and specific tasks you completed at the internship that relate to the job you are seeking to obtain.

If you are having trouble narrowing this down, list all of your responsibilities and skills out and then reference the job listings you are applying for. Decide which ones are relevant and essential to include and add those to the resume.
