What is the hiring process at Sysco?

By Zippia Team - Sep. 14, 2022

The hiring process at Sysco varies by position and usually takes several weeks due to the drug testing and background checks that are required.

There are three basic steps to the hiring process at Sysco:

  1. Application: Prospective employees are encouraged to explore the Sysco careers webpage for information on Sysco's business, culture, and available jobs. Areas of interest for careers include:

    • Driver/Transportation

    • Maintenance

    • Warehouse

    • Sales

    • Merchandising

    • Information technology

    • FreshPoint

    • Redistribution network

    • Specialty meat and seafood

    • SYGMA

To apply, you will be prompted to create an online profile via Workday if you don't already have one. After you have submitted your application, you will be able to update your profile, apply for jobs, and monitor your application status using the online portal.

Pre-screening text messages or assessments may be sent to you, or you will be contacted by a member of the internal recruitment team regarding the next steps.

Please note that full COVID-19 vaccination may be a condition of employment depending on the role and location. If you have concerns, please discuss this with a member of the internal recruitment team.

  2. Interview: If your skills seem to be a match for the role, you will be contacted to set up a phone interview where you will discuss the role in greater detail and ask any questions you have regarding the role and/or the company. If the recruitment team feels that you are a good fit, you will move on to the panel interview.

The panel interview usually takes place with the hiring manager and at least one team member who is currently working in the role you have applied for or is at a similar level. This interview tends to involve a lot of scenario-based questions in order to gauge your personality and experiences in past roles.

    Typical interview questions include:

    • Tell me about a time that a manager told you to do something you disagreed with

    • How do you handle difficult situations?

    • What is your greatest strength/weakness?

    • Are you willing to work onsite?

    • Tell me about a time you had to come up with a solution that required thinking outside of the box

  3. Offer and Onboarding: If you are selected for the role, a member of the internal recruitment team will contact you to review the offer letter details, benefits, and more information on your new career at Sysco.

Once you have accepted an offer, you will be asked to complete forms and start the pre-onboarding process. You will also be required to submit for a drug test and background check. The internal recruitment team member will provide you with more detailed information on how to complete these steps.

Tips for nailing the interview process include:

  1. Be curious: Read about Sysco's culture, missions and values, and growth behaviors. Be prepared to discuss their business models and ask questions that show you are truly interested in the company.

  2. Complete the application: Make sure that you have answered all areas of the application completely. You can even use your LinkedIn profile or resume/CV to preload the application for you.

  3. Follow them: Follow Sysco on LinkedIn and other social media pages to keep up on the latest news. Impress your interviewer by knowing the latest and greatest information on the company during your interview.
