What should I study to become a psychiatrist?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

You should study psychology or major in a pre-medicine program to become a psychiatrist. You must gain a lot of knowledge and skills in science and math. This highlights why a pre-med program can be a good choice.

To be a psychiatrist, you are also going to have to attend medical school. So any proper preparation for doing so is highly recommended.

In medical school, you then have the option to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (DO). This comes down to your preference as a DO takes a more holistic view concerning diagnosis and treatment, while an MD tends to focus more on administering medications to treat symptoms and for prevention.
