What skills should an engineer put on their resume?

When deciding what communication skills to include, we recommend doing two things. First, review the job description and highlight all of the skills they touch on. Second, assess your professional skills and identify which ones overlap with the job description. From this, choose three to five key skills that you believe would best showcase your expertise.

Now comes the fun part. You should prove these communication skills by creating descriptive details that demonstrate how you've used each one in the workplace. We recommend starting with an action verb and including real numbers to support your achievements when possible.

For example, rather the just listing that you have Matlab skills, you can describe it under the experience or education section as "Created over ten laboratory assignments for students using MATLAB Simulink and Adam Pluto transceivers."

We recommend writing your soft and hard skills separately. Your hard skills will largely depend on the type of engineering you do (mechanical, electrical, software, etc.), so make sure to customize the skill section to fit your engineering resume.
