Jeff Bezos owns Amazon. Jeff Bezos is an American entrepreneur who played a key role in the growth of e-commerce as the founder and chief executive officer of Amazon.com, an online retailer.
Amazon was founded in Jeff Bezos' garage in 1994. Initially starting out as an online marketplace for books, over the years, Amazon has expanded to selling an extremely wide variety of products, and is the number one online retail seller in the United States.
Amazon went public in May 1997. It began selling music and videos in 1998, and then started international operations by acquiring online sellers of books in the United Kingdom and Germany. The following year it started to sell video games, consumer electronics, home improvement items, software, games, and toys.
In 2021, Amazon surpassed Walmart as the world's largest retailer, outside of China, a result largely due to its paid subscription plan, Amazon Prime, which has over 200 million subscribers worldwide.
In addition to physical products, Amazon also sells massive amounts of streamable content through services like Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Music, Twitch, and Audible. In 2021, Amazon had an annual revenue of $469.822 billion, with 1,608,000 employees working at the company. Amazon is the second largest private employer in the United States.
