Hank and Doug Meijer own the Meijer. The two brothers took the company over from their father in 1990.

Meijer is a Michigan-based supermarket chain that was started by Hank and Doug's grandfather, Hendrick, in 1934. The brothers acted as the company's CEOs until 2017, and still serve on Meijer's board of directors.

Meijer has 253 stores, over half of which are in Michigan, with the others scattered throughout the Midwest. The company posts $19.5 billion in annual sales and also owns the Fresh Thyme chain of specialty food markets.

In 1962 the company's Thrifty Acres was considered the first supermarket wherein groceries, general merchandise, and gas stations were available at the same site. Meijer also launched a wholesale club in the early 1990s called ClubSource. Most of these were closed or converted into traditional Meijer supermarkets.

Today, Meijer is considered one of the largest private companies in the country and is ranked as the 21st largest retailer in the United States.
