Who owns Nordstrom?

By Zippia Team - Aug. 22, 2022

The Nordstrom family owns Nordstrom with a 31.2% stake in the company. Swedish immigrant John W. Nordstrom founded the company, initially just one shoe store, in 1901. Carl F. Wallin, the other founder, had a shoe repair shop adjacent to Nordstrom's. 1930 saw the grand opening of the remodeled Second Avenue store.

By 1958, Nordstrom had grown to have eight locations in two states but still only sold shoes. It started selling apparel in 1963 when Nordstrom purchased Best's Apparel of Seattle. In 1971, the company went public on NASDAQ, and in 1999 it was moved to the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol JWN for John W. Nordstrom.

In 1995, the company had 46 full-line department store locations in various states. In 2021, the company had annual revenue of $14.789 billion with a workforce of 62,000 employees.
