The Mississippi LLI attorney also will contribute to the Reporters Committee's amicus and pre-publication/vetting practices for matters within Mississippi; facilitate and conduct trainings for journalists and news organizations in their state; and work with stakeholders across Mississippi to, among other things, increase the visibility of the LLI. This full-time position reports to the Director of the Local Legal Initiative.
The Mississippi LLI Attorney must be based in Mississippi; Jackson, Hattiesburg, or Oxford is preferred. Some travel throughout Mississippi and to the Reporters Committee's office in Washington, D.C. is required.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Representing Mississippi journalists and news organizations in litigation and other matters involving access to judicial records/proceedings, freedom of information, and other newsgathering and First Amendment matters; this includes, among other things: intake/case selection and other strategy decisions; drafting correspondence, administrative appeals, pleadings, briefs, and other filings in trial and appellate courts; and appearing on behalf of the clients in state and federal court;

Democracy: Education and Youth. Through litigation and advocacy, the DEY team challenges the school-to-prison
pipeline, which traps young people in a cycle of institutionalization, and opposes censorship and exclusionary policies

Democracy: Voting Rights. Through litigation, the DVR team pushes back against racial gerrymandering; challenges
discriminatory tactics to disenfranchise voters; and advocates for Black and Brown communities to fully exercise their

The Staff Attorney is responsible for providing all legal services required to establish paternity, child support, medical support and the enforcement of new and existing orders. The Attorney provides legal advice, counsel and litigation services.
Essential Job Requirements
Ensures proper legal representation in all child support matters related to paternity and support order establishment and enforcement.
Negotiates with opposing counsel, attends hearings, and performs other related actions
Recommends and reviews legal actions.
Drafts, reviews, and signs legal documents.
Ensures all orders contain required federal and state elements and vigorously advocates the interests of the state.
Updates automated systems with necessary information to monitor each case through the legal process.
Provides legal advice to Specialists in completing documents for court filing.
Maintains a positive working relationship with State.
Attends weekly project team meeting.
Applies knowledge of federal and state child support policies and procedures.

Required Education
A Juris Doctor degree and a license to practice law in the state where the project is located.
Required Experience
Legal experience in domestic relations law or as a prosecutor is desired (child support enforcement preferred).
