CHILDRENS CRISIS CENTER history

After five years of hard work and many difficult decisions such as licensing and site location, what was then known as the Minneapolis Crisis Nursery opened to the community in 1983.

Originally opening its doors in 1986, the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery was the first Crisis Nursery in the state of Missouri, founded by the Junior League of St Louis, the Coalition of 100 Black Women and Deaconess Hospital.

1987 – Merger of Hillsborough County Crisis Center, Inc. with Sexual Abuse Treatment Center, Inc. and Suicide and Crisis Center, Inc.

1990 – Sexual assault services relocated from emergency room of Tampa General Hospital to free-standing facility; services expanded to include exams for males 18 years of age and older.

1991 – APPLE Services established as family-centered sexual abuse treatment program.

Services were expanded in 1993 to include the Crisis Nursery, providing emergency shelter for younger children, newborn to 12.

By 1994, The Battered Women’s Shelter’s Board of Directors felt the demand for victim services warranted an agency solely dedicated to carrying out this purpose, and ceased functioning as a YWCA chapter.

1996 – Basic Life Support ambulance services began.

1997 – Travelers Aid Society of Tampa, Inc. and Family Support Center, Inc. merged with the Crisis Center.

The agency’s name changed again in 1998 to the Crisis Center for Women, Inc. (CCW).

1999 – Name changed to Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, Inc. to reflect a growing array of services.

2000 – Child Victim Rapid Response (CVRR), a school-based domestic violence prevention program, is started.

2001 – 211 services launch in Tampa Bay with calls answered by the Crisis Center.

In June of 2003, the Crisis Center for Women was awarded a capital grant from the Donald W Reynolds Foundation.

2004 – The first Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners at the Crisis Center are certified with the International Association of Forensic Nurses.

2005 – The Crisis Center started Teen Anger and Aggression psycho-educational group.

2007 – Crisis Center launched National Training Center for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE).

2009 – Crisis Center of Tampa Bay awarded the Tampa Bay Business Journal’s 2009 Overall Nonprofit of the Year Award.

2012 – TransCare Medical Transportation Services receives the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) designation, recognized as the “gold standard” in the ambulance industry.

2013 – The third trauma counseling location is opened in Brandon.

2015 – TransCare Medical Transportation Services is re-accredited with the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS).

2018 – The Florida Veterans Support Line expanded statewide to also include ongoing care coordination services for veterans.
