Christchurch School history

1925 Less than two years later, i.e. on January 29th 1925, a special train brought the first boarders to Devlali and Barnes School was declared open by Leslie Wilson, Governor of Bombay and patron of the Bombay Education Society.

Without him, the school probably would not have survived its early years and this is the reason that his portrait hangs in the Evans Hall, named in his memory when he retired in 1934.

The history of Christ Church School dates back to 1953 when it was registered as a private school, run by the Anglican Diocese, at Dorset Road.

School opens in the fall of 1959 in three frame houses then located on East Washington Street.

However, due to declining enrolment in 1972, Christ Church and the Anglican Diocese decided to convert the school into a Government-Grant-in- Aid school.

In 1973, Christ Church School became a fully government-aided school and was renamed Christ Church Secondary School (CHR). The school started functioning with eight Secondary One classes.

In 2000, the Field House was expanded and connected to the main church building with the construction of the welcome center and parish hall.

In 2005 the whole school community celebrated the school’s 150th birthday in style.

The Rectory served as the home for the parish priest until 2000. It housed various ministries until, in 2010, it was completely rennovated to become KidsFirst Childcare Center.
