Job Summary Location: Stockton, CA Responsible for the safe and efficient operation and management of staff at the generating plant. Key Accountabilities * Directs plant operations and operating personnel to ensure that generating requirements and plant efficiency are maintained, and that local, state and federal safety and operational environmental standards are met. * Develops, implements and manages consistent plant operating philosophies and best practices to maximize plant availability, efficiency and productivity. * Constantly reviews and improves operational processes and ensures that operating personnel are properly trained and adhere to established procedures and standards in accordance with prudent industry practices. * Manages the fuel yard, including safe and efficient storage and mixing of biomass fuel, maintains positive fuel supplier relationships and overall quality control of fuel supply. * Manages safety and environmental compliance and reporting to federal, state and local government authorities. * Develops performance goals and reviews to align employee accountabilities and conduct with operational processes. * Investigates operating abnormalities and incidents to improve equipment availability and performance and to minimize maintenance requirements. * Prepares necessary plant operation reports in a timely manner and investigates all forced outages. * Prepares and continually evaluates the operating department's budgets and/or makes recommendations to the Assistant Plant Manager relative to optimize Operations cost effectiveness, work quality, outage time, and capital budgets. * Reviews and provides operational input to maintenance and assists with maintenance engineering evaluation and troubleshooting of equipment abnormalities. Maintains a consistent and effective level of communications with Assistant Plant Manager, Maintenance Manager, Administrative staff, and O&M Technicians on shift. * Establishes department and group goals based on market dynamics and the needs of customers, employees, the owners and other stakeholders * Assures proper staffing, scheduling, orientation and training of the plant staff, and manages compliance with all company policies and procedures. Recruits, interviews and assigns Operations employment candidates. * Performs all other duties as assigned Minimum Education & Experience Requirements * High School Diploma or equivalent and knowledge and capabilities typically acquired through at least 6 years supervisory experience in a solid fuel fired power plant, or * Associate degree or industry-recognized certificate (i.e., the completion of a core group of course designated by the institution) in a related discipline is preferred and knowledge and capabilities typically acquired through at least 4 years supervisory experience in a solid fuel fired power plant, or * Bachelor's degree in a related discipline with a minimum of 3 years supervisory experience in a solid fuel fired power plant Other Qualifications Preferred * Wood fired boiler and Steam Turbine Generator operating experience is highly desired to provide for the following: A thorough, demonstrated understanding of power plant operations, with strong understanding of the maintenance function. Understanding of steam turbine technology, mechanics, hydraulics, electricity and electronics. Other Requirements * Thorough, demonstrated understanding of plant operations, with strong knowledge of generating equipment, biomass fired boilers, and water treatment processes. * Ability to analyze and improve operations business processes, utilizing information about market dynamics and competitors' processes and achievements. * Working knowledge of operations and engineering functions and their interrelation to maintenance. * Demonstrated skill in planning, coordinating and directing varied programs and tasks directly effecting the overall plant operation. * Ability to plan, coordinate and direct varied programs and tasks directly involved with the maintenance component of the plant, but directly influencing the entire plant operation. * Understanding of accounting systems as it relates to work orders. * Experience with accounting practices as it relates to analyzing cost impacts to budget. * Ability to analyze and improve maintenance business processes, utilizing information about market dynamics and competitors' processes and achievements. * Strong oral and written communication skills. * Understanding of Risk-Based Asset Management (RBAM) strategies. * Solid knowledge of plant engineering and plant maintenance functions and how they relate to operations and income. * Ability to work shifts and extra/irregular hours and to work under unusual and special conditions that can arise in a biomass fired generation plant. * Proficient in the use of MS applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint in a Windows environment. Extensive experience with computer-based maintenance management programs and Internet. * Ability to pass respirator fit tests to use respiratory protective equipment or self-contained breathing apparatus at all times. Job Summary Location: Stockton, CA This position's primary responsibility is to provide fuel to the boiler; as well as being responsible for all of the equipment, fuel, and machinery. POSITION SUMMARY: The Marathon Martinez Renewable Fuels Facility is seeking highly motivated Operators to join our team. Operators work together to monitor, regulate, troubleshoot and safely operate complex process equipment. Operators work in a safety-sensitive environment and must successfully complete a rigorous pre-employment process which includes drug/alcohol and medical screenings, and a background check. To ensure safe operations, new hires must also successfully complete operator qualification training and participate in random drug and alcohol screenings. Successful candidates will be assigned to either the Renewable Fuels or Terminal Complex following successful completion of Basic Operator Training. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Operators are responsible for running process units safely, in compliance, reliably and efficiently during each shift. All operations are carefully controlled to meet and maintain operating targets established in a daily operating plan. Continuous regulatory compliance is maintained by properly monitoring and controlling critical operations. Other primary responsibilities include: Completes unit equipment inspection rounds several times each shift to ensure it is operating safely reliably, and efficiently. Completes specific equipment checks as required and take scheduled samples. Also investigates and corrects unusual conditions such as noise, odors, leaks, hot or vibrating equipment, etc. Identifies maintenance work and submits electronic work requests. Helps prioritize maintenance. Routinely performs minor maintenance as scheduled or needed and maintains good housekeeping. Plans, prepares, and facilitates the safe turnover of equipment for maintenance. Prepares work packages and work permits ahead of scheduled maintenance. Completes job walks with mechanical crews to ensure task alignment and safety. Additionally, reviews all completed maintenance jobs to ensure the work is complete and the job site clean, prior to signing off work orders. Adjusts unit operations as required to meet operating targets and stable/efficient operations. Directly coordinates operations with upstream and downstream units, while keeping shift supervision updated on all significant variances from operating plans or targets. Changes, upsets, problems (actual or potential) are also communicated to all potentially affected units and shift supervision. Routinely troubleshoots and handles upsets or off-target variances. Requests additional assistance from shift supervision when unable to handle the upset within the crew's capability. Routinely trains on the off shifts for compliance, qualification, emergency, and enhancement training. Helps develop and maintain operating procedures. Maintains thorough, concise and complete unit logs of all significant operation changes, priority status, and problems. Most Chemical Engineering co-ops and interns enter into the following positions: Process / Technical Service Engineers may work on a variety of projects in the Technical Services Department together with your mentor that put your classroom experience as a Chemical Engineer into practice. The vast majority of our Chemical Engineering interns/co-ops work in this area. The experience will expand your understanding of the refining environment and technical aspects of the refinery. Past projects/duties include: develop and lead test runs to optimize refinery operations; perform process engineering calculations concerning the various process technology (or equipment) in the refinery; monitor and make recommendations in regards to catalyst and adsorbents; complete projects and provide recommendations for improvements to the refinery process and equipment. Operations Research Engineers may help develop planning, blending, scheduling, and process models for refinery engineers. Environmental Engineers work on projects that involve the compliance of the entire refinery, and you will be exposed to the majority of process units in the refinery. You will be applying the engineering principles and calculations to various environmental projects and will also give you a broad knowledge of the various environmental laws that are applicable to refineries and what it takes to maintain compliance with those laws. Past projects/duties include: perform process calculations for the Risk Management Plan, including taking physical surveys of refinery process units; work on various process engineering projects within a Wastewater Treatment Plant; participate in inspections and/or testing that is conducted by federal, state, or local officials. Products Control / Economics Engineers may work on a wide array of projects including operations, blending, and refinery economics. You will gain an understanding of how a tank farm is operated and how gasoline and other products are prepared and shipped to customers. In addition, you will gain some exposure to the overall economics of the refinery and how operating decisions are made based upon these economics. Past projects/duties include: analyze refinery process flow data and compare to recommended optimum levels, this will help in identifying equipment failures which cause variances in capacity from the optimum levels; update information on gasoline blends and tank samples in preparation for an annual blender waiver audit; develop applications to better present process data for refinery operating decisions. The majority of Electrical Engineering co-ops and interns enter into the following positions: Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Project Engineers work on a variety of real-world electrical and instrumentation projects in a refinery setting. During your time at MPC, you will develop and utilize project management skills including scope alignment, cost and schedule development, and teamwork through multiple engineering phases. You will also support the area teams. We are committed to developing engineers into professional project managers who successfully manage projects of all sizes. Reliability Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Engineers troubleshoot Electrical & Instrumentation issues at the refinery. As a reliability intern, you will help analyze failures of equipment, develop solutions for recurring equipment difficulties, submit Project Request Forms (PRF's) to implement solutions, and understand equipment maintenance strategies. There will be opportunities to use electrical analysis software to solve coordination issues and run Arc Flash studies for the power system, as well as learning and understanding about how our critical Refinery Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) are applied. Process Control / Technical Service Engineers can work on a wide array of projects in support of the process control systems installed throughout the refinery and products movements areas. The process control systems in the refinery provide real-time control and data acquisition functions in support of operating the refinery process and electrical equipment. Typical college co-op assignments include the following: troubleshooting system power supply problems, control system programming, hardware and software lifecycle replacement projects, installing and troubleshooting communication networks and monitoring control system performance metrics.
