1867

The Dominion of Canada formed in 1867, but as an integral part of the British Empire its foreign relations remained under the control of London.

1916

The site had been a Ford dealership (built in 1916 by Irwin and Leighton as Ford Service Building) and a public library.

1923

American and Canadian government officials increasingly interacted through joint commissions and military cooperation, and the two governments even negotiated a bilateral fisheries treaty in 1923.

1927

The American Legation in Ottawa was established on June 1, 1927, when William Phillips presented his credentials as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary.

The Embassy of Canada was originally located at 1746 Massachusetts Avenue NW on Embassy Row, in a house that had been purchased in 1927 from the widow of Clarence Moore, a financier who died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic.

1943

The American Legation in Ottawa was elevated to Embassy status on November 19, 1943, when Ray Atherton presented his credentials as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

1978

In 1978, the Canadian government purchased a vacant lot on Pennsylvania Avenue NW for $5 million.

1989

The embassy building was officially opened by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney on May 3, 1989.
