JOB SUMMARY: Provide appropriate, efficient and timely pre-hospital basic life support care and transportation of the sick and injured in accordance with local, state, national and Acadian Ambulance standards of practice. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position. Conducts a careful examination of the patient for signs and symptoms of illness/injury and assists other medical personnel as necessary. Administers prompt and efficient basic life support care within the limits of licensure or certification and in accordance with approved protocols prior to and during transport. Provides careful handling of the patient to and from the ambulance. Provides safe and efficient transport of the patient in the ambulance to the medical facility. Provides a safe and efficient transfer of patient and patient care information to the receiving personnel at the destination. Documents all aspects of patient condition and treatment on EMS run reports. Obtains and records non-medical patient information as required. Completes other patient documentation and forms as required. Conducts regular unit inventory and equipment testing to ensure all equipment for which the EMT-Basic is responsible is present, clean and in proper working order. Upon completion of transport, responsible for all assigned duties which will place the ambulance and equipment back in service. Responsible for full knowledge of the ambulance's basic life support equipment and its proper use at all times. Documents and reports all needed repairs to the proper maintenance departments (electronic or mechanical) as well as to supervisors and other ambulance personnel as required. In the absence of other qualified personnel, responsible for the use of basic extrication tools and procedures to gain access to the patient if necessary. In the absence of other qualified personnel, responsible for controlling the patient's surroundings in such a way as to minimize further danger and control the actions of bystanders. In both the emergency and non-emergency setting, operates / drives the ambulance in a safe and efficient manner, following company driving guidelines, so the safety or condition of the occupants are not compromised. Orders supplies and equipment from Central Supply to replenish station and ambulance inventories as needed. ADVANCED EMT Provides Advanced Life Support including medical evaluation, treatment and stabilization of the critically ill and injured; responds to emergency rescue situations involving potential loss of life or bodily injury; maintains control, manages and directs patient care at the scene of a pre-hospital emergency; provides training and instruction to lesser trained personnel; performs other duties as required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB: • Provides and directs fast, efficient Advanced Life Support to the ill and injured utilizing all basic and advanced abilities and techniques, including but not limited to the placement of peripheral and intra-osseous lines, supra-glottic airways, endotracheal intubations, fluid and drug therapy, and AED use including defibrillation; • Recognizes and understands a medical emergency and makes reasonable and acceptable differential diagnosis; • Performs critical physical examinations; • Understands and anticipates the pharmacological treatment of critically ill and injured patients; • Understands and anticipates potentially life-threatening presentation of non-cardiac emergencies and institutes appropriate emergency therapy where essential for the preservation of life; • Deals with medical and emotional needs of any victim of acute illness or injury with the goal of reducing mortality and morbidity; • Responsible for managing and directing all first responders at the scene of a medical emergency such as EM R' s, Police Departments, and EMT's; • Responsible for quality patient-care as established by the Company; • Files standardized reports of patient information and care for the use of receiving hospital and administration, including nature of request for aid, pertinent past history, therapy provided diagnosis, disposition and sufficient patient information for billing purposes; • Maintains effective communication with physician on duty at hospital to relate patient condition and obtain orders for treatment; • Follows standard written protocols when a physician cannot be contacted; • Transports the ill and injured to institutions of medical care; • Operates emergency vehicles in a safe manner under all conditions; • Cleans and maintains equipment; • Properly completes patient statistics and medical information forms for administrative use; • Performs technical rescues in removing victims from varied terrain and circumstances; and, • Follows standard operating policies and procedures as developed and directed by the Company. The incumbent at all times must be able to carry or help carry someone from the site of the injury to the mode of transportation (vehicle/helicopter) and attend the injured party to the hospital. In order to perform a physical assessment of the injured party, the incumbent must see, hear, and communicate with the injured party. As per TMHC (Team Mobile Health Care) policy, employees should always wear their seatbelts when in a company vehicle. • Renders emergency and non-emergency medical care in accordance with the rules, regulations, protocols, policies, and procedures of TMHC (Team Mobile Health Care), the State of Tennessee, DPH/OEMS, and the Regional Office of OEMS, consistent with good judgment and the provision of high-quality medical care. Appropriately and safely deliver the patient to the nearest, most appropriate medical facility. • Works with ALS personnel in a professional manner and works at their skill level in accordance with the Tennessee DPH/OEMS and company policies. Maintain good relations between our own ALS services as well as outside services. • Acts at all times in the best interests of high-quality patient care, in the best interests of the patient, and in such a manner to reflect credibly on TMHC (Team Mobile Health Care) and the professional reputation of the emergency medical technician. • Acts at all times with his/her personal safety in mind and the safety of his/her partner, the patient, other EMS personnel, bystanders, and any other public safety personnel present. • Accompanies BLS patients to their destination, continuing to provide appropriate care and patient advocacy until the responsibility for the patient has been transferred to an appropriate medical professional and a report has been given. • Cosigns all patient care forms for completeness. • Completes all appropriate documentation and record-keeping for every assignment. • Adheres to Universal Precautions/Body Substance Isolation when dealing with patient contacts. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the daily activities and operations inside the Operating Room when handling sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment while also maintaining a sterile field following professional standards during operating procedures.
