Position Summary:
The Child Life Specialist (CLS) utilizes play, preparation and education to assist children and families in coping with the stress and trauma often associated with a hospitalization. The Child Life Specialist uses an evidence-based approach to clinical practice; providing ongoing assessment of interventions. The CLS is an essential member of the health care team, supporting the psycho-social needs of the child and family.
Position Requirements:
Understanding of child life, child growth and development, child psychology and family dynamics acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree in child life, child development or related field. Completion of a 600 hour internship experience and one year of experience working with children in a health care setting
Current CPR certification - Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
Certified Child Life Specialist credentials or able to complete within first year of employment
Demonstrated proficiency in verbal and written communication. This includes: assessment, evaluation and provision of accurate and timely handoff of child and family information with members of the healthcare team.
Analytical skills to observe and assess behaviors in order to direct appropriate therapeutic play programming and interventions in support of the individual child/family.
This position will support outpatient lab, Monday-Friday. Position requires participation the weekend rotation schedule to offer house-wide staffing support.

Essential Functions

Your Role

Duties:
Assessment and Delivery of Direct Services
• Utilizes assessment information to establish relevant, strengths-oriented family goals that are in line with primary goals of child safety and improved family functioning. Ensures that progress towards family goals are documented, at minimum, monthly.
•Delivers high-quality direct services including support, guidance, visit coaching, mentoring, and education offered to parents who are receiving supervised family interaction sessions, parenting skill building assistance, basic home management, and life skills services; examples of these services include but not limited to, crisis management during family interaction sessions; mediation and negotiation between family members; and basic parenting education and intervention.
•Facilitates families' connections to necessary community services as additional needs arise or that are identified as a risk in the assessment process.
•Provides updates on family progress to all relevant staffing or planning meetings (i.e., permanency staffing, 45-day staffing, family team meetings, etc.)
•Facilitates ongoing conversations with parents to identify informal supports to move towards a family-like setting with supervision of the visit coming from a natural support.
Advocacy and Teaming
• Effectively advocates for the needs and interests of families who are receiving supervised family interaction sessions through the Family Preservation program. Assesses family strengths and areas of need during family interaction sessions and one-on-one meetings with parents.

* Participate in formal and informal public relations activities in order to promote acceptance of guidance as a reliable and valuable student service;
* Contribute to the solution of student issues such as truancy, failures, and disinterest in school, discipline issues, assorted conflicts and dropouts. The counselor is expected to seek out such students and provide appropriate guidance and counseling services;
* Participate in various group/guidance programs in order to provide students with information and insight pertaining to testing programs, job opportunities, school policies, regulations, procedures, programs, etc.;
* Assist in the organization and administration of state, district and school testing programs for students, but shall not serve as the building test coordinator;
* Make every reasonable effort to become more knowledgeable and competent by participating in in-service programs, maintain membership in professional organizations, reading professional literature, taking additional graduate work and attending appropriate professional conferences;
* Participate in the evaluation and revision of the school guidance program and plan the guidance program calendar;
* Fulfill professional responsibilities; (a) maintain confidentiality; (b) maintain records consistent with ethical and legal guidelines; (c) participate on the school-based crisis team; (d) perform responsibilities in an organized, accurate, timely and dependable manner; (e) operate within the established district and school procedures and policies; (f) provide support for other school and district programs and personnel; (g) utilizes computers effectively in the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities;
* Perform such other guidance-related duties as may be assigned by the Associate Superintendent of Teaching, Learning and Professional Practices and/or the Guidance Academic Chair.
* Perform such other professional duties as may be assigned by the building principal.
Qualifications: Must have valid Illinois Professional Educators License. Teaching experience (including student teaching and internship) at identified grade level within the last five years preferred.
Endorsements: School Counselor, Grade 9-12.
Compensation: Per Teacher Contract.
