In 2012, Namely was founded to create an HR platform as intuitive as social media, but powerful enough to support the complexity of today’s workforce.
True Ventures was the primary investor in Namely’s Series A fundraising round, which raised $3.4 million in June 2013.
Sequoia Capital led a $45 million Series C round in June 2015.
The company was valued in the mid-hundreds of millions at the time, more than its estimated $250 million valuation following a $30 million round led by Sequoia Capital in February 2016.
In 2016, Namely and Cigna introduced a new benefits market with 12 pre-defined medical, dental, vision, and life insurance choices.
In January 2017, Straz told Forbes he hoped to take the company public in the following 24 to 36 months on the heels of a $50 million fundraise led by Altimeter Capital and Scale Venture Partners.
In May 2018, the company’s founder and CEO, Matt Straz, was fired for behavior that was “inconsistent with what is expected of Namely leadership.” Elisa Steele, the company’s permanent CEO, was appointed in August.
