The History of The National Science Education Leadership Associationformerly The National Science Supervisors AssociationBy Robert FarielChapter 1 The Seeds are PlantedAt an informal dinner meeting at e the 1955 NSTA Convention in Cincinnati, a group of science supervisors discussed common problems.
The Science Teachers Association of Texas was formally organized in 1957 during the Fourth Annual Conference for the Advancement of Science & Mathematics Teaching (CASMT).
The panels for the meeting in 1961 were:Duties and Functions of Supervisors Staff and Organization for Effective Science Education and/or Supervisors.
In 1966, the Nassau County Science Supervisors Association became the first affiliate of the NSSA. The Florida Science Supervisors Association became the second affiliate followed by the Greater Chicago and Elementary Science Supervisors Association as the third affiliate.
By March of 1969, the NSSA had an additional membership problem: the organization had started small, but now had grown so that there was increasing difficulty with communication with the membership.
At the beginning of 1972, the United States economy was in poor health.
NSSA unveiled its new banner in 1979 at the NSTA Convention in Atlanta.
A NSF grant was obtained for the summer of 1980.These Summer Leadership institutes are still being held each summer.
NSSA has been a true organization, promoting leadership in science education.In the fall of 1980, the NSSA and the Council of State Science Supervisors (CS3)coordinated a nationwide scholarship program sponsored by the Thomas Alva Edison Foundation and the Max McGraw Foundation.
The spring of 1986 saw the Video Tape Exchange established.
Bob Fariel left as the LISE Treasurer and Executive Secretary in March, 1992.
The association celebrated its 60th anniversary during the 2017 Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST), held in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center just weeks after Hurricane Harvey.
