The town of Newhall was established in the summer of 1876 as a little flag stop along the brand-new Los Angeles-to-San Francisco line of the Southern Pacific Railroad.
Fueled in part by the 1876 discovery of vast oil resources in the area, families began to move into the regions surrounding Newhall.
And if the school building burned down, why was it not rebuilt on the same site, as was done in 1890?
Fire would prove the nemesis of the Newhall School District in the early years. It struck for the first time in 1890, burning the original Newhall School to the ground.
Children who wished to pursue their studies beyond the ninth grade could do so after 1896, when San Fernando High School was built.
After 1899, ninth graders joined their underclassmen at San Fernando High, as the ninth grade was discontinued in Newhall.
Local history books tell us the second Newhall schoolhouse suffered the same fate as the first in 1914, burning to the ground — but this is by no means a certainty.
The school site on 10th Street (Lyons) didn't lend itself to expansion (for real this time), and when a permanent home with "growing room" was secured at the corner of Eleventh and Walnut Streets in 1928, the former schoolhouse was split in half and converted into private homes.
Now they could ride in a converted automobile that Newhall merchant S.D. Dill used as a school bus until 1932, when he purchased a new bus.

The Preparatory School was founded in 1947 at Goodings, near Newbury, with just 14 pupils.
The school thrived under the leadership of Headmistress Sr Magdalen John CRSS and, with 100 pupils, relocated to a larger campus at Denford Park, Hungerford, in 1953.
The Preparatory School was closed in 1967 and all resources were put into the development of New Hall Senior School.
The school remained at Denford until 1967, at which time there were 150 pupils, many of whom were boarders and with some boys as well as girls.
In 1994, the Preparatory Divisions were re-established on the campus at New Hall.
In 1995, the Preparatory Divisions welcomed its first boarders and the boarding programme was later extended to boys as well.

Katherine Jeffrey, the school’s first Lay Principal, was appointed in 2001.
In 2001, New Hall appointed its first lay principal, Mrs Katherine Jeffrey.
Opening with just 40 pupils, the school grew rapidly and, in 2003, the first Preparatory boarders were welcomed.
A Pre-Reception provision was opened for pupils aged 3-4 in 2004.
The New Hall School Trust (NHST) was established as a new registered charity (1110286) and limited company in 2005.
In 2009, Channel 4’s Time Team filmed at New Hall for their special feature-length documentary, Henry VIII’s Lost Palaces.
The new academy formally opened in September 2013, forming the New Hall Multi Academy Trust (NHMAT), a partnership between New Hall School and Messing Primary School.
