1971

In January 1971, Operation Ranch Hand officially reached its end.

1979

In 1979, a group of veterans brought a class-action lawsuit against seven chemical companies that produced the herbicide, according to History.com.

1984

Now, the Act of 1984 dealt with herbicides or dioxin and radiation.

Maura: But back in 1984, the Act was requiring of the positive association and the regulation got it wrong by requiring that cause and effect.

1988

By the time the United States Supreme Court affirmed the settlement in 1988, the value of that settlement, with interest, had grown to $240 million.

1991

Maura: So, then it sounds like up until 1991, there were no presumptions at all for any particular conditions.

It didn’t say herbicides in general. It wasn’t the Agent Orange Act of 1991, which a lot of people are familiar with, but that was the very first time Congress acted on Agent Orange.

2010

The list of diseases – expanded as recently as 2010 – includes non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, chronic B-cell leukemia, soft tissue sarcoma, type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease, multiple myeloma, chloracne, Parkinson’s disease, prostate cancer and respiratory cancer. (You can see the full list here.)
