The Work

Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Provide accurate ASL-to-English and English-to-ASL interpretation for one-on-one interactions, group settings, and virtual or in-person meetings.
Facilitate communication in a variety of settings, including but not limited to education, healthcare, legal proceedings, and community services.
Utilize Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) and other technologies to deliver high-quality remote interpretation services when required.
Maintain strict confidentiality and adherence to ethical standards outlined by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID Code of Professional Conduct).
Work collaboratively with Deaf individuals, colleagues, and organizational personnel to deliver seamless communication.
Perform other language support tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Qualifications - Here's What You Need
Minimum 5+ years of professional ASL interpreting experience in one or more relevant fields (e.g., education, medical, community, or legal).
Bachelor's Degree in American SignLanguage (ASL), Linguistics, Deaf Studies, or a related field is strongly preferred.
Must hold one or more of the following professional certifications:
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification.
Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) certification.
Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) certification, or equivalent.
Minimum Skills
Fluency in ASL and English, with exceptional comprehension, vocabulary, and cultural awareness.
Thorough understanding of the Deaf culture, and the ability to engage with the Deaf community effectively and respectfully.
Strong ability to manage complex or sensitive communication exchanges with professionalism, discretion, and empathy.
Physical stamina and mental focus for extended interpreting sessions in both remote and in-person environments.
Outstanding interpersonal skills, social awareness, and sensitivity to cultural nuances.
Familiarity with virtual interpreting platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or VRI tools) for remote assignments.
Must pass a background check and comply with additional client or project-specific screenings during employment as required.
Travel availability to support on-site assignments when needed.
Desired Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in American SignLanguage (ASL), Linguistics, Deaf Studies, or a related field is strongly preferred.
Experience interpreting in high-profile or specialized fields (e.g., federal courts, higher education, or corporate environments).
Knowledge of tactile interpreting (e.g., for Deaf-Blind clients).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Interpret for individuals and/or families who don't speak English at different predetermined locations for in-person medical appointments. Interpretation will include interactions during hospital admissions, hospital discharges, clinical visits including specialty clinics, outpatient surgeries(pre-op and post-op) outpatient diagnostics, schools, and sometimes emergency room visits.
Follow all Linguava and client protocols described in the Linguava employee handbook and the national standards of practice. This includes but is not limited to: educating patients, families, and providers on your role as the interpreter. Checking yourself in and out of appointments on time and staying for the full scheduled duration. Call and advise Linguava when you have any cancellations in order to attempt to replace that appointment with another.
Manage an organized expense report to be updated regularly with mileage travel to and from all appointments. Have the report ready to turn in once a month by the predetermined due date.

Consulting and Education Services
* Works with medical staff to promote alternative communication approaches for more effective medical treatment of non-English speaking patients. Consults and educates department management on best practices of working and communicating with LEP employees. Serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to patients, staff, management and providers in contributing to successful outcomes. Educates staff and faculty on topics of cultural awareness, LEP populations, and working with interpreters.
Patient Services
* Respectfully aids patients in finding internal and external resources when deemed appropriate. Works collaboratively with other auxiliary departments to ensure Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients can access and actively participate in their health care. Works with medical staff to promote alternative communication approaches for more effective medical treatment of LEP patients.
Documentation

Works with medical staff to promote alternative communication approaches for more effective medical treatment of non-English speaking patients. Consults and educates department management on best practices of working and communicating with LEP employees. Serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to patients, staff, management and providers in contributing to successful outcomes. Educates staff and faculty on topics of cultural awareness, LEP populations, and working with interpreters.
Patient Services
Respectfully aids patients in finding internal and external resources when deemed appropriate. Works collaboratively with other auxiliary departments to ensure Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients can access and actively participate in their health care. Works with medical staff to promote alternative communication approaches for more effective medical treatment of LEP patients.
Documentation
Documents interpretation encounters and keeps logs related to program and operation required for accurate billing submitted within deadlines communicated by the Interpreter Services Manager. Complies with all OHSU mandatory requirements including annual TB Screening, required education, and immunizations and takes responsibility for following accurate timekeeping processes.
Professional Contribution

Correct grammar, clarity and tones between the two languages.
Experience with following the speakers' direction, professionally interject when clarification is needed, and manage the flow of a conversation.
Refrain from side conversations with the LEP and entering into any disagreement with the customer or LEP
Compliance with applicable ethics and standards
Experience in the healthcare, legal, medical, government or court industries.
Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
At least one (1) year of on-site consecutive or simultaneous interpreting experience
Two (2) professional references that can vouch for your work as an on-site consecutive or simultaneous interpreter
Minimum age: Must be 18+ years or older
Minimum education: Must have High School Diploma
Must reside in the state of Washington
Full fluency in English and demonstrated native or near-native level proficiency in target language
Able to provide at least one of the following accreditations:
