1951

On September 10, 1951, the hospital officially opened.

1967

Fortunately, traditional lobotomies fell out of practice in the United States the moment Freeman performed his last operation in 1967 that resulted in the patient’s death.

1969

The hospital added its first long-term care addition in 1969, made possible through a $154,000 donation from Reine Wells.

1977

The Story County Medical Center Endowment Foundation was originally formed in March 1977 as the Story County Hospital Foundation.

1982

In 1982, the bylaws were changed to make the organization an Endowment Foundation and the emphasis began to shift towards fundraising for the hospital.

1986

1986, three university-affiliated hospitals — Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Presbyterian-University Hospital, and Eye & Ear Hospital of Pittsburgh — unified under an organization that would evolve into UPMC.

1990

1990, the name “University of Pittsburgh Medical Center,” or UPMC, was adopted.

1991

In 1991, a $65,000 fundraising drive was held to assist the hospital in purchasing a new ambulance.

1993

In July 1993, the Foundation had the opportunity to purchase the old Johnson Medical Clinic which was owned by Doctor Jerry King.

1995

Story Medical Clinic - Nevada opened in 1995 and offers primary family health care for acute or chronic health concerns for Nevada and the surrounding communities.

Another successful fundraising activity was completed in 1995 which raised approximately $300,000.

1996

The Zearing clinic's success was followed by the opening of the Story Medical Clinic - Maxwell in August 1996.

1997

1997, recognizing the efficiencies possible from complementing its provider network with a health insurance product, UPMC started its Insurance Services Division.

1998

In 1998, the Foundation provided the funds to pave the south parking lot.

2001

Following a busy summer bringing the hospital into compliance with Critical Access Hospital standards, the hospital was inspected by the Department of Inspection and Appeals and was awarded Critical Access Hospital status on December 1, 2001.

In the summer of 2001, Story County Hospital applied to the state of Iowa to become a “necessary provider,” the first step in becoming a Critical Access Hospital.

2006

On March 9, 2006, Story County Medical Center announced its plans to build a new facility on the outskirts of Nevada.

By September 2006, an employee-only fundraising drive raised over $110,000 for the capital campaign.

In October 2006, the Foundation secured a matching grant from the Josephine Tope Charitable Trust in the amount of $600,000.

2009

The campaign closed in March 2009 with over $1.4 million in pledges.

The South Campus of Story County Medical Center opened in August of 2009.

2011

According to this study on the impact of lunar phases on emergency operations and intraoperative blood loss from 2011, more than 40% of the medical staff was convinced the moon cycle can affect human behavior, but scientific data analysis did not support this belief.

2017

In response to continued demand for the services of Story Medical, an addition to the South Campus opened in February 2017.
