Middle School Spanish Teacher
Wildwood School 3.8
Substitute teacher job in Los Angeles, CA
School Description
Wildwood School is currently seeking a dynamic educator who is interested in and responsive to an evolving and innovative educational environment. Central to its K-12 program is an emphasis on student-centered inquiry that is hands-on, collaborative, discerning, and reflective. Students are expected to think critically in authentic ways about how to think (not what to think) and to develop a sense of intrinsic motivation as lifelong learners. Learning at Wildwood is rigorous and complex. Essential questions with a focus on transferable and enduring understanding provide students with footholds as they work to master the discipline-specific standards of their various courses. During their analysis of case studies, exploration in fieldwork, evidence-based argumentation in writing, hypothesis testing in lab work, and synthesis of perspectives on small group projects, Wildwood students gain an understanding of who they are, how they think, how they feel, what they can do, and why.
Position Description
The current opening for a middle school Spanish teacher calls for an educator interested and experienced in teaching the acquisition of Spanish speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills at the middle school level. A fuller course description is available in the Middle School Curriculum Guide.
This full-time position is for:
One section of Spanish 6 (four quarter-long rotations for sixth graders),
Up to three sections of Spanish A (the 7th-grade Spanish course), AND
One section of middle school advisory (grade to be determined) with up to 14 advisees
A note about advisory: This comprehensive program is a hallmark of a Wildwood education from grades 5 through 12. Advisors serve on a team with other advisors in the same grade level and travel together as a cohort with the same group of single-aged advisees until 8th grade, with the presentation of a Gateway. Curriculum for advisory is anchored by core principles and program strands, and it is refined each year to ensure relevance and richness for students.
Key duties for full-time teachers include:
Creating, planning, and delivering curricula that meet the goals of the K-12 scope and sequence
Creating lesson plans and instructional materials for the classroom
Guiding and supporting student learning, differentiating appropriately
Consulting with school resources-school counselor, learning resource specialist, Academic Services Coordinator, etc. -to support the learning and growth of each student
Collaborating with colleagues, maintaining healthy and respectful communication
Regularly assessing the progress of each student to plan and support student growth and development
Maintaining professional and timely communication with both students and parents/guardians, particularly regarding students' academic progress
Writing clear and concise progress reports to communicate students' progress and learning needs to parents/guardians and students
Meeting administrative deadlines in a timely manner (e.g., narratives, emergency/first aid training, Child Abuse Reporting Acknowledgement, etc.)
Keeping accurate records: attendance, accidents, expenses
Attending all faculty meetings (divisional, K-12, department, committee, etc.) and other school events
Participating in faculty hiring committees, as appropriate
Purchasing, with the approval of the school director, relevant instructional materials that deepen learning
Maintaining a clean and orderly classroom/laboratory
Supporting social and emotional development of students through caring interactions and instruction, and, more formally, through advisory and DEIB programming
Participating in ad hoc committees relating to Core Responsibilities and the functioning of a grade, discipline, division, etc.
Collaborating and leading curricular coordination, growth, or professional development when called upon
Covering lunch and break supervision
Chaperoning the middle school retreat (three days and two nights at an offsite location)
Arriving to work on time and being present (on campus) during regular working hours unless absence is approved by a director
Requirements
Minimum of three years of teaching experience, preferably with middle school-aged students

Experience facilitating or co-facilitating an advisory group
Demonstrated passion for working with young people
Record of commitment to professional development and growth
Eagerness to contribute to the life of the school in and out of the classroom
Experience in a school with a similar philosophy and approach to teaching and learning to those at Wildwood preferred
Professional Development

Faculty and staff engage actively in task forces, work groups, and committees, fostering cross-divisional interactions and enhancing student learning through joint curriculum design and project development. From weekly meetings with topics ranging from academic to DEIB to SEL skill building to and for teachers, to K-12 professional development days, to workshops and conferences both locally and nationally, Wildwood School prioritizes professional development with robust budgets and pathways for learning. Of particular note: Faculty interested in developing new or refining existing curriculum are encouraged to apply for funds for the Research Exploration and Advancement Program, which funds up to $10,000 in self-directed summer study anywhere in the world. Wildwood embraces faculty and staff who contribute to multicultural education, global citizenship, and a diverse, inclusive community.
School Location

OUR MISSION
Pacifica Christian High School is a liberal arts high school devoted to teaching young men and women from all neighborhoods to think critically and wisely, instilling heartfelt joy and interest in learning, while encouraging lives of faith, character, and service to the glory of God.
Pacifica Christian is
Pacifica is an independent Christian high school in the heart of Santa Monica, California. We were founded in 2005 and our first class of students graduated in 2008.
...a liberal arts high school
We believe that Pacifica provides a truly distinct version of a classical liberal arts education, incorporating arts and sciences, language, philosophy, and theology into our core graduation requirements. Pacifica is a college preparatory experience that is designed to teach students how to think, not what to think.
...devoted to teaching young men and women
Pacifica is intentionally a coeducational experience, as young men and women learn together in a community of scholars, athletes, artists, entrepreneurs, scientists, and philosophers. A distinction of our student body is that they love to come to school, and we would have it no other way.
...from all neighborhoods
Our campus is unlike any other private high school in Los Angeles, integrating families from over 50 different zip codes into a close-knit, supportive community. Pacifica is a welcoming environment for people of all walks of life and all faiths (or no faith at all) and dedicated to Christian precepts and values in all we do. Financial aid is crucial to ensuring our community is accessible for all families and has bridged the gap for hundreds of students since the schools inception.
...to think critically and wisely
Students are faced with a new problem in their education: not a lack of resources, but an infinite number of uncurated sources that can have a profound influence at a critical time in their intellectual development. Pacifica students learn to discern what is true, what is right, and what is good from teachers who pursue integrity and wisdom in their own lives and who are committed to providing mentorship and quality instruction.
...instilling heartfelt joy in learning
High school should not be a competitive proving ground, but unfortunately, the college landscape has impacted the virtue of learning for learnings sake. Pacifica students are encouraged to find a balance between rigor and relaxationa practice intentionally implemented throughout the class schedule, homework load, and coursework itself.
...while encouraging lives of faith, character, and service to the glory of God.
As a Christian school, Pacifica students learn from faculty who live out their faith. In the classroom and through other experiences, students are encouraged to examine their own relationship with God by exploring lifes most important questions, contemplating meaning and purpose, and pursuing goodness and truth in their day to day lives. As a community, we daily strive to love God with hearts, souls, and minds, and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:34-40).
