Job Description
Uncommon Special Education teachers are passionate about developing and monitoring accommodations for students with special needs. Special Education teachers advocate for students and believe that specialized instruction and related services increase academic achievement. Special Education teachers offer academic, emotional, and physical support while maintaining high expectations.
Responsibilities
1. Instruction
You'll modify, differentiate, and teach an inclusive curriculum that emphasizes diversity.
You'll collaborate with families and Special Education teams to develop 504 and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that offer appropriate accommodations and modifications.
You'll create an inclusive and safe environment where students feel empowered to become self-guided learners.
2. Special Education Specific Responsibilities
You'll collaborate with general education teachers, school leaders, and families to analyze and respond to trends in student work samples and assessments and ensure compliance with Individualized Education Plans.
You will gather academic growth data and write goals to prepare for annual IEP meetings.
You will teach pull-out, push-in, small group, and one-on-one instruction and implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom.
3. School Culture
You'll build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
You'll partner with students' families to ensure appropriate resources are available to support their child's learning needs.
You'll engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
You'll participate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model our core values, and encourage student achievement.
You'll partner with your grade level team to develop academic goals and practice instructional strategies.
Qualifications
A demonstrated commitment to supporting students' social emotional and academic development
An enthusiasm for collaborating with internal and external partners in the best interest of students
A self-directed learner who solicits and implements feedback to improve outcomes and achieve objectives
Required Experience:
A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred).
Academic expertise in Special Education, the Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or related fields of study.
Prior to the start of employment, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and have earned a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher by the time employment begins. You do not need to be certified to be hired; however, if hired you will need to pass state teacher certification tests to meet the MA state requirements.
Teachers are qualified to teach independently if the teacher holds one of the following qualifications for the appropriate grade and severity level:
MA special education license
Special education license or equivalent issued by another state or
Documented completion of approved undergraduate or graduate program in special education
If a teacher does not hold any of the qualifications above, the teacher may only deliver specialized instruction if:
The teacher is under the
direct
supervision and oversight* of an educator who holds an initial or professional special education license (Moderate Disabilities License), or is otherwise qualified as per above;
And
Must pass the following MTELs within the first year of employment:
Communications and Literacy Skills test, and,
MTEL subject area tests (English or Mathematics)
SEI endorsement

Compensation for this role is between $57,000 to $89,000.
Starting pay is determined using various factors including but not limited to relevant full-time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time Teaching experience will likely have a starting salary of $57,000.

Uncommon Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) teachers are passionate about literature and building an engaging classroom culture. Our teachers develop subject mastery and have a keen sense of the socio-emotional changes middle schoolers experience. * Support the maintenance and improvement of regulatory compliance
* Process referrals for and chair all original, re-evaluation, and emergency placement team meetings; develop Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for these students, including transition for students with disabilities beginning at age 14; secure parent signatures for these plans; chair annual review meetings until such time as the Boston School Committee has satisfied its bargaining obligations to have Special Education Teachers and Related Service Providers chair the annual review meetings, and provide teachers and other service providers as appropriate with copies of IEPs at the beginning of each year and when changes occur thereafter
* Consult with and support special education teachers and related service providers in their responsibilities to chair annual reviews and develop IEPs for these students when the Boston School Committee has satisfied its bargaining obligations to have Special Education Teachers and Related Service Providers chair the annual review meetings.
* Chair team meetings for students with disabilities served in private placements who may be returning to Boston Public Schools
* Chair Section 504 eligibility meetings and develop 504 accommodation plans
* Collaborate with the Principal/Head of school in aligning student schedules with IEPs and 504 plans
* Collaborate with the Principal/Head of school, and the teachers, and related service providers, to manage activities relating to compliance with all state and federal special education regulations and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act,

Follow proper cleaning and sanitizing procedures to ensure a healthy environment, including but not limited to proper hand washing and cleaning/sanitizing practices.
Assist Classroom Teacher in implementing planned curriculum, arraigning classroom environments, and decorating of classroom.
Maintain equipment and child care property.
Foster a warm, relaxed, and non-threatening atmosphere in the classroom.
Using developmentally appropriate expectation, interact with children throughout the day, modeling appropriate behaviors and expectations. This includes sitting and interacting with children during free time, structured time and at meal times.
Assist children to be self-reliant modeling appropriate communication and personal hygiene. (i.e., brushing teeth after snack).
Use positive approach to help guide children's behavior constructively; using re-direction, role modeling, planning for transitions, and setting developmentally appropriate expectations to encourage appropriate behavior and social skills. Report to the Teacher any special needs or problems of individual children or any cases of suspected child abuse or neglect.
Document any concerns or problems with the children.
Internship Requirements:
Must be at least 16 years of age
Enrolled in an EEC program at their host school
Interns will be under the direct supervision of a qualified Teacher at all times.

Job Summary
The Classroom Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instructional services to students, collaborating with colleagues and families, and ensuring strong academic outcomes. Responsibilities and Duties

Participate in all required professional development sessions.
Attend weekly grade-level meetings, weekly/bi-weekly Teacher Assistance Team (TAT) meetings, and bi-monthly staff meetings.
Participate in IEP meetings as needed.
Complete required Special Education documentation and implement classroom accommodations outlined in IEPs and 504 Plans.
Conduct weekly (designated) peer practice sessions for 30 minutes.
Attend and conduct four parent-teacher conferences annually (two in fall, two in spring).
Participate in Back to School Night, open houses, and other mandatory evening events.
Perform assigned morning, lunch/recess, and afternoon duties.
Support, adhere to, and uphold all school policies and procedures.
Carry out additional duties assigned by grade-level leaders, department heads, and the Leadership Team.
COVID-19 vaccinations are not required.
