1968

Tower Isles was founded by Beryl and Earl Levi in 1968 as a small family bakery in Brooklyn.

1969

In order to avoid confusion with the traditional American Patties, WE coined the term “Jamaican Style Patties” in 1969.

The original vision for Willis Tower came to life in 1969 when Sears Roebuck and Company decided it needed a central office space for its 350,000 employees.

1973

In 1973, the court ordered ARA to cease purchasing “certain types of wholesale operations in the paperback books and periodicals field” and to divest itself of a portion of its vending business.

1974

Skydeck opened in 1974 and attracts more than 1.7 million visitors annually.

1977

By 1977, the company had divested almost all of its vending operations.

1979

By 1979, ARA operated more than 6,000 food service establishments in the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, and Germany.

Sales for the first six months of 1979 topped $1 billion.

1981

ARA’s reputation was tarnished once again in 1981 as a federal grand jury began investigating the company’s student transport division to determine whether it engaged in a bid-rigging strategy designed to squeeze out local competition.

1992

Its image was greatly improved, especially in its food service and leisure service divisions, where “customized service” allowed the company to expand throughout Europe and into Japan, and even serve Olympic athletes their native foods at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

And in 1992, ARA spun off a portion of its geriatrics division in an initial public offering that raised $112.7 million.

1994

Having transformed itself from a collection of vending machines into a mature, $5 billion corporation, ARA developed a new logo and changed its name to ARAMARK Corporation in 1994, reflecting the changes that it had undergone during its 36-year history.

1996

In 1996, “La Belle France” and “Le Parisien” were transformed into one huge brasserie.

1997

By 1997, ARAMARK recorded $6 billion in sales.

Along with strengthening business operations, management also sought to solidify its ownership in the company and announced a $440 million stock buy-back plan of its entitled “Share 100” in 1997.

1998

In 1998, ARAMARK secured a ten-year contract with Sprint Corp. to manage food service operations at its world headquarters.

Willis Tower was the world’s tallest building until 1998.

1999

In early 1999, the firm announced plans to acquire the Restaura dining operations of Viad Corp.

2001

According to the Outsourcing Institute, United States-based companies spent over $200 billion in outsourcing noncore operations and were predicted to spend over $300 billion in 2001.

2009

In July 2009, United States Equities Realty led the design and construction of a multi-million-dollar renovation of Skydeck Chicago.

In 2009 the building was renamed Willis Tower after the Willis Group Holdings, the global insurance broker who calls the Tower its Midwest home.

2015

Willis Tower was purchased by Blackstone in 2015 for $1.3 billion.

2017

In 2017, 125,000 square feet of new amenity space including ‘Tower House’ and ‘Altitude’, were built exclusively for Willis Tower tenants.

In early 2017 Blackstone and EQ Office announced plans for the biggest restorative transformation project in the building’s history.

2019

After some significant renovation et refurbishment works, the mythical spot reopened to the public in summer 2019.

2022
