Vincennes University history

For instance the Indiana Territorial Capitol Building, considered the oldest major government building in the Midwest, was built in 1805 as a tailor shop. Visit the Vincennes Convention and Visitors Bureau for more information.

Because of Vincennes’ status as the capital of the Indiana Territory, it figured prominently in early Indiana-Illinois territorial and statehood policy. For example, on February 3, 1809, the Tenth United States Congress passed legislation establishing the separate Indiana Territory in preparation for Indiana's proposed statehood.

For over two-hundred years, VU was historically the only two-year university in Indiana, although baccalaureate degrees in seven select areas are now available and were available prior to 1889.

In 1897, a small literary society called Tau Phi Delta (ΤΦΔ) was started at VU, which soon after became the founding ("Alpha") chapter of Sigma Pi (ΣΠ) Fraternity, making that organization the first of its kind to be founded west of the Ohio Valley.

Published continuously since 1905, the Indiana Magazine of History is one of the nation's oldest historical journals.

Since 1913, the IMH has been edited and published quarterly at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Indiana University Press was founded in 1950 and is today recognized internationally as a leading academic publisher specializing in the humanities and social sciences.

1982 – Began offering Ombudsman service to residents of long-term care facilities.

1988 – Published first issue of Generations magazine.

2000 – Began producing food for all six counties using the Ferdinand Production Center.

2001 – Started AngelWorx volunteer program.

2005 – Launched Link-Age Aging Resource Connection offering a new concept in accessing social services and delivering aging and disability information.

2007 – Introduced EngAGE, an agency initiative to promote the creation of livable communities for all ages and abilities.

2008 – Accredited by the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems qualifying our agency to be a 2-1-1 Call Center.

2010 – Held first Disability Awareness Workshop for fifth graders.

2012 – Created Generations’ Facebook page.

2013 - A comprehensive Community Needs Assessment was conducted and the results were shared during an open forum in June.

Prior to the 2015 implementation of CLP, our agency developed person-centered systems for addressing the needs of seniors and adults living with disabilities.
