W South Beach company history timeline

1981

In 1981 he bought his first building, which led to a career buying and selling residential buildings and shopping plazas, including the Miracle Mile Shops in Las Vegas and much of the Lincoln Road pedestrian mall in South Beach.

2004

In 2004, after two years of negotiations, Edelstein bought the 3-1/2 acre beachfront property for $77 million, promising the owner, who ran a Holiday Inn there, that he would build a great hotel.

2006

The developer has sold 200 of 408 units since beginning sales in 2006.

2009

Since it opened in July 2009, the W has counted among its guests Denzel Washington, Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn.

Reigning as Miami’s high-octane resort and nightlife destination for over a decade, the W South Beach’s 400+ guest suites, spa and leisure spaces have undergone a dreamy refresh — a serene departure from its original look that first debuted in 2009.

It’s the W name that persuaded Ronald Kimel, a Canadian who owns a real estate management company, to pay $7.25 million in 2009 for a three-bedroom penthouse with a private pool and sprawling outdoor space overlooking the Atlantic.
