West Lincoln High School company history timeline

1873

A well-known educator, D. Matt Thompson, was appointed the first headmaster of the academy in 1873.

1920

Burgin Ballard's father moved his family into the house in 1920, when Burgin was only three years old. "I've just about been here ev'er since," Burgin said.

1921

As aresult, many small schools were consolidated in 1921 to form the new Union HighSchool.

1925

Rock Springs High School was placed on the state’s accredited list in 1925.

1926

Love Memorial Elementary School was established in 1926 when a Lincoln County received $75,000 in bonds from the North Carolina State School Board.

1927

In August 1927, it was reopened forblack children.

1935

During a severe storm in 1935 the building was blown off itsfoundation.

1938

The school population continued to grow, and in 1938 a three-classroom agricultural building was added.

A new high school was built for eastern Lincoln County in 1967, and Rock Springs High School became Rock Springs Elementary School, serving grades one through eight.

1978

The fall of 1978 school year found our school enrollment adjusted to serve grades three through six.

1989

In 1989 the sixth grademoved to West Lincoln Middle School and Union began serving kindergartenthrough fifth grade.

1993

In 1993, an additional wing of eight classrooms was added to our facilities.
