POSITION: Assistant Professor of Acting, Full Time - Tenure Track
DEPARTMENT: Department of Theatre, College of Liberal Arts, Slippery Rock University.
SUMMARY: The SRU Theatre Department is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and motivated theatre artist and scholar to fill a new, full-time, tenure-track faculty position to begin Fall 2026. This position will lead the continued development and execution of the BFA Acting program; teach several specialized BFA technique courses; and direct at least one production a year in our $31 million+ newly-renovated performance facilities.
The Theatre Department at SRU is a well-established undergraduate program offering a BFA degree in Acting (with concentrations in Musical Theatre and Acting) as well as BA degrees in Acting, Theatre Arts Management, Design & Technology, and Theatre Studies. Our department focuses on producing contemporary and new work as well as boldly inventive adaptations of classics. We are also focused on cultivating authentic, unique artists who are resilient and prepared for the theatre of tomorrow. To support our community we practice the principles of TIE and boundary work -honoring and respecting boundaries in all spaces: classroom, creative, and community.
The candidate will be expected to assume a prominent leadership role in the successful development and continuing implementation of the new BFA Acting concentration, including extensive recruitment responsibilities, curricular development, mentoring of students, and advancing the visibility and reputation of the department and university.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching responsibilities: 3-4 courses per semester.
Course rotation WILL include Acting 1 (for BFA Acting students), Movement for the Actor, Acting for Camera I & II, Scene Study/Advanced Scene Study
Course rotation MAY include (as applicant's abilities and schedule allow) Senior Showcase, Auditioning, Acting Shakespeare, Voice for the Actor, Meisner Technique, Stage Combat, IPA/Dialects, Fundamentals of Acting (non-major acting course, and Art of Theatre (large general education course)
Additional Responsibilities will include: directing 1-2 mainstage productions per year; participation in the development and leadership of the BFA Acting concentration; recruitment, advising, continuing professional development, service to the department, college and university.

Minimum Qualifications
Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in Acting, Directing, Musical Theatre, or appropriately related theatre discipline completed by August 1, 2026
Evidence of a body of work as a professional actor
Evidence of experience teaching at the post-secondary level
Evidence of previous training/experience in, and the ability to teach:
* Movement for the Actor
* Acting for Camera I & II
* Acting Techniques such as Meisner, Global Majority Acting Techniques, Chekhov, Viewpoints, etc.
* Fundamentals of Acting/Acting I
Evidence of the ability to direct theatrical productions
Evidence of a commitment to the education of diverse populations
Experience with community engagement and/or service.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications:
* At least three year's successful post-secondary level teaching experience;
* Experience recruiting, developing curriculum and/or leading a BFA Acting Program;
* A broad knowledge of acting and directing techniques (including global majority theatrical traditions);
* Incorporation of global-majority best-practices in teaching;
* Experience teaching IPA/Dialects;
* Experience incorporating TIE and Boundary work into teaching practice;
* Excellent communication and organizational skills;
* Experience advising and mentoring students;
* Established, or potential for, collaborations with regional and/or national professional theatre companies

* Experience directing musical theatre.

Completion of an approved registered nursing education program, MSN or higher
Must be able to teach in the classroom
Two or more years in the practice of nursing as a registered nurse providing direct patient care
Current, valid licensure as a registered nurse in Ohio

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
Uses the RISE Up! Trainings and credentialing programs provide foundational employability skills to help students earn one or more of the three certifications available, which include: Retail Industry Fundamentals, Customer Service and Sales, and The Business of Retail.
Uses the CBI Curriculum and credentialing programs to provide foundational employability skills, career exploration and work based learning.
Uses other resources and materials, develops any supplemental training materials that align with all business credentials to support the student's ability to earn these industry credentials.
Provides direct and authentic instruction to students through the development of lesson plans, pacing guides and activities that will ensure adequate time necessary for participants to learn the skills that result in the achievement of industry credentials.
Provides a supportive and positive learning environment in which students are actively engaged in learning.
Coordinates with Intervention Specialists to identify students who require learning accommodations. The teacher is also required to appropriately incorporate those accommodations into all instructional activities and testing with regards to the individual's dignity, respect, and privacy.
Provides support and guidance to students as they develop business skills with an emphasis on employability / soft skills such as teamwork, communication, accountability, and resiliency.
Incorporates critical thinking and functional academics by providing project-based and/or problem-based learning opportunities to help students develop the communication and teamwork skills necessary to work through issues that are common to the business trades.
Ensures proactive, open, and effective communication with other members of the school team especially in regard to issues and concerns related to participation, performance and well-being.
Mentors, coaches, and advises students about workforce skills needed to gain employment in this job sector. Uses personal experiences to guide and positively influence students as it relates to leadership development, self-discipline, and optimism.
In coordination with the School Director, Director of Career-Technical Education and Placement Specialist, helps build relationships and contacts with business partners that may provide employment opportunities for graduates.
Provides required performance reports; participates in relevant meetings, workshops and/or committees.
Maintains a detailed tracking system and completes all steps of certification processes ultimately resulting in the participants receiving their credential in a timely manner.
Performance Outcomes
Maintains and provides weekly updates on the appropriate “Progress Tracker” for each credential.
Ensures completion of a “Menu” for each student interested in earning certifications in the Business, Finance and Marketing pathway.
Ensures the completion of Credit Flex Plans for each student so that students may be awarded available academic credits.
Ensures that all students are appropriately enrolled in the correct DASL course.
Completes all steps necessary for students to take the certification test and ensures that copies of any certifications earned are provided to the school's Placement Specialist for inclusion in the student's Career Portfolio for graduation.
Assists in securing Workforce Experience (WEX) opportunities for students and ensures that classroom learning is relevant and functional in supporting a student's WEX placement.
Participates in Quarterly Workforce Advisory Committee as needed.
Actively assists in the recruitment and retention of students in this pathway, especially as it relates to improved attendance and certification completion.

ENG 101 - Exploration of Self
A study of the writing process with the personal essay as its goal. Students compose informal and autobiographical essays after studying model works representing various cultures and writings.
ENG 102 - Reading/Writing Connections
An introduction to research emphasizing those skills essential to production of the formal research paper. Students learn the principles of argumentation and close textual analysis, including the ability to summarize, paraphrase, annotate, document, and critically interpret sources. Most sections are offered in an on-campus academic classroom although some online sections may be offered. Each section meets for eight weeks, and there are two eight-week terms per semester. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach.

Uses the CBI Curriculum and credentialing programs to provide foundational employability skills, career exploration and work based learning.
Uses other resources and materials, develops any supplemental training materials that align with all business credentials to support the student's ability to earn these industry credentials.
Provides direct and authentic instruction to students through the development of lesson plans, pacing guides and activities that will ensure adequate time necessary for participants to learn the skills that result in the achievement of industry credentials.
Provides a supportive and positive learning environment in which students are actively engaged in learning.
Coordinates with Intervention Specialists to identify students who require learning accommodations. The teacher is also required to appropriately incorporate those accommodations into all instructional activities and testing with regards to the individual's dignity, respect, and privacy.

Ensures the completion of Credit Flex Plans for each student so that students may be awarded available academic credits.
Ensures that all students are appropriately enrolled in the correct DASL course.
Completes all steps necessary for students to take the certification test and ensures that copies of any certifications earned are provided to the school's Placement Specialist for inclusion in the student's Career Portfolio for graduation.
Assists in securing Workforce Experience (WEX) opportunities for students and ensures that classroom learning is relevant and functional in supporting a student's WEX placement.
Participates in Quarterly Workforce Advisory Committee as needed.
Actively assists in the recruitment and retention of students in this pathway, especially as it relates to improved attendance and certification completion.

PHIL 203 Moral Philosophy
This course focuses on the meaning of human happiness and the ethical norms necessary for attaining it. Discussions include the ethical virtues and the meanings of such concepts as good/evil and right/wrong. Selected moral problems and ethical theories are also explored. Offered every semester.
Classes meet for eight weeks, and there are two eight-week terms per semester. The sections are offered consecutively: one from August 18 to October 11; the other from October 20 to December 13. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach.
Requirements:
Candidates should possess a minimum of a master's degree in Philosophy with a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours in the subject to be taught and preferably have experience teaching at the undergraduate level.
