Political Breakdown of 30 Largest NY Companies

The political climate in the United States is…

Tense.

That’s putting it lightly.

With every new policy or social issue that comes into play, the relationship between Democrats and Republicans becomes more and more strained by the day. Whether the discussion is on immigration, taxes, or trade — the only thing we can all agree on is that no one can agree on anything.

We the people of the United States have recently started familiarizing ourselves with the political affiliations of the companies we choose give our business to. While you practice being a responsible consumer, we want to make sure you’re aware of where companies stand on the issues that matter to you.

Whether you’re curious about the politics of a company you’re thinking of applying to, or you just want to know where your favorite coffee shop stands on the immigration issue, it’s good to know if a company’s values align with yours.

On that note, we’ve compiled the political affiliations of the 30 biggest companies in New York, based on the last ten years of employee political donations.

A summary of the political affiliations of the 30 biggest companies in New York

  • When you look at which parties the employees of companies donate to, NYC Health + Hospitals turns out to be the most liberal in all of the Empire State with 94% of 107 donors giving to the Democratic party in the past 10 years
  • The most conservative big company in New York? That would be Hospira, with 52% of 44 donors giving to the Republican party
  • The companies with big Republican donors tended to be banks, healthcare providers, and insurance agencies. The companies who gave the largest donations to the Democratic party tended to be universities, entertainment outlets, and specialty retailers
  • The most frequently occurring job titles for Democratic donors were Attorney/Lawyer and Chief Executive Officer, while the most frequently occurring job titles for Republican donors were Accountant and Finance Analyst
  • The biggest Republican donor we found in the data was James H. Donovan, of Goldman Sachs, who donated $470,200 to the Republican party. The biggest Democrat donor we found was Charles Phillips, from Infor, who donated $390,582 to the Democratic party

How Zippia Determined A Company’s Politics In New York

Unlike some other websites, we rely on data over opinion when it comes to understanding companies.

So when we decided to take a look at which of the really big companies in the Empire State were the most conservative and liberal, we took a data-centric approach.

Specifically, we dug into the donations to political parties and PACs by employees of the 30 biggest public and private companies in New York.

To identify how liberal or conservative a company may be, we obtained data from the Federal Election Committee. They provide detailed donation data for individuals from 2007 onwards — around 32,000,000 political donation records.

We then matched donors to the companies where they reported they worked. We considered a donor to be a unique combination of:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • State
  • Company

Next, we had to deal with (1) donations to candidates and (2) donations to PACs for determining if the donor gave to a conservative or liberal cause.

1. Donations To A Candidate:
These were easy. We used the candidate’s party to determine if it is was given to a Republican, Democrat, or other.

2. Donations To PACs:
These were a bit trickier since a majority of PACs give to both liberal and conservative candidates. We ultimately only included donations to PACs that gave >60% of their funds to a candidates of a certain political affiliation.

Put differently, the PAC had to have a super-majority of its funds go to a specific political party.

Finally, we divided the number of total conservative or liberal donors by the total number of donors at a company. For example, the most conservative company, NYC Health + Hospitals, had 4 conservative donors, 101 liberal donors, and 2 other donors.

101 / (4 + 101 + 2) = 93% Liberal

Any ties went to the company with more donors.
